self-pay & complications

I'm sure it's just a local infection that will clear up with antibiotics... and I pray you'll all think those positive thoughts right along with me... prayer is always helpful also.

Thanks

I've got some type of infection and I am scared to see my own doctor.

She actually had it done herself in Mexico three years ago.

You should never be scared to see you own doctor. GO NOW. Infections do not clear up on their own, and will only worsen. A doctor who had this done herself should be the most understanding person you could see. Good luck.

I checked with my insurance, and they will cover any complications. They would have covered my band had I been willing and able to continue for another year--at the time they had a 12 month medically supervised WL attempt clause. I did it for 10 1/2 months and was in a car accident that left me hospitalized and in surgery--and interupted my 12 CONSECUTIVE months, so was going to have to start over.

Which was a technicality-------but insurance would not cover another sleep study, psyche evaluation, cardio consult, none of the pre op testing without reason for referral again for 2 years, so all of that needing to be done within 3 months of surgery--would have been out of pocket!

So in the end, the driver at fault---her insurance settled with me, and I used that to self pay in MX.

BUT since my insurance would pay for the surgery (now with much less hoop jumping involved! of course!), they will cover complications. Would cover fills-IF there was anyone in network to do them.....and there isn't!

I was glad to find this out!

GREAT question!

Kat

I have Cigna and was very lucky that they covered my complications. I hope everything turns out for you...let us know how you are doing:)

Turns out I popped a stitch on my port.

The stitch was trying to work it's way out and irritating the incision on it's way out.

10 minutes with the Dr and the stitch plucked out.

She said she didn't think it looked infected.

All Good !!!!

Thanks for all the positive thoughts.

I received my lap band on March 25, 2010 I lost 50 pounds total. However, a week after I had my surgery I got sick with leakage, severe gas and possible infection. The doctor took almost all the Fluid out. All this time my insurance had been paying for this. I had been back at least 3 times to get a refill. On one of the visits my doctor was having a hard time getting to the port. Will in August I went to get another refill because I was not having any restriction at all. He was unable to get to the port. I had to see the Radiologist and he was not able to reach my port. Now I was suppose to go back to the hospital to fix whatever was going on. However, I get a phone call saying that my insurance will not cover a reversion surgery and it will cost me 1500. What are you for real one day before I was suppose to get this fixed. My band had slipped and it is twisted I believe down onto my stomach. When I eat I have no restriction and I get severe pain in my stomach area so bad I can not move. Then were the large incision is at it gets puffy. I just want to know why I am going to have to suffer for something that was supposed to work. What to do. I have Medicare and Medicaid now. Oh I just found out that I need to have a lap band adjustment under Fluoroscopy. Why don't the insurance cover this.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
