Diet confusion

Recommended Posts

Jax, I'm with you on that!

I was a binge eater before WLS. I yo-yo'd from 140 up to 180. Then from 180 down to 160. Then back up to 185. Then down to 145. Then up to 256. Then to 200, 180, 136 (atkins)...but then back up to 200.

It's confusing...just like the diets.

Drive thru 3x daily and chips and Pepsi. Of course I was fat.

Now? Well, I'm happier than I've ever been with my body AND I haven't dieted.

When I want a candy bar...I eat one! Just had Dove chocolate last night.

When I want pizza, I have it. Had 1 slice for supper tonight w/ cheese doodles and Mt. Dew.

But that's 3 bites of pizza, 2 cheese doodles, and about 5 ounces of drink.

Doesn't sound like dieting, huh? It's not. It's a new lifestyle. I can eat what I want...but have to portion out things so I don't overeate anymore.

But today at lunch was egg salad. So you can see it's not junk all the time. Yesterday at BK I just sat and enjoyed the company of my children, I just didn't want that junk.

Grace, right now I'm a bit more limited than just smaller portions. I am 2 weeks post-op, and I can only have liquids and pureed food, moving to soft foods early next week. In the future, I don't plan to ban myself from certain things. I will eat them in moderation unless it is something that I discover just does not agree with my band. However, most of the time, I would like to stick to things that are healthier and will give me the best results, as I have about 165 lbs still to lose. That is why I am trying to figure this whole thing out. Just because I used the word diet doesn't mean I am "on a diet" as diet also means food intake as a whole, like "liquid diet".

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
