Can't give up COFFEE!

Recommended Posts

I think its just another one of those things that is nothing more than a surgeon's personal belief which has no basis in reality. Plenty of doctors dont ban caffeine, and I've never given it up. Most bandsters dont.

I'd ignore that rule and just not tell him personally.

When I first mentioned to him and my dietitian that I was nervous about giving up caffeine they both responded the same "who said you had to give up caffeine or coffee"

My Doctor said I could have as much coffee as I wanted as long as it settled ok in my stomach. I haven't stopped yet.

I was told no caffeine immediately after surgery, and during the first several weeks, but now I get in about 18oz a day, or two larger cups. IN reality for me, I actually don't get hungry when I am drinking coffee. I know that for every coffee I drink, I also drink an equal amount of extra Water.< /p>

The nutritionist told me that they say no coffee because now that we have designer coffee...such as carmal mocha machiattos sp? and frappacinos...the word coffee is too polluted with bad calories and fat. So, she tells everyone none...but...she told me a normal cup is fine...'course I haven't been banded yet...the tune may change

I was never told anything about giving up coffee, so I didn't. I drink 1 large cup at home OR 1 large coffee from a to-go place everyday. Sometimes 2 if I want to...but that's how I've always been so I haven't changed a thing.

My Doc has asked me to stop becuase it dehydrates and after band you need all the Water you take in. I've gone to drinking Decaf, with sugar-free Creamer and splenda. It took me a while to get used to functioning "naturally" but it is way easier now. I think it took a good two weeks to get the need out of my system.

I agree that it is the extra stuff we add to coffee, but coffee on its own does increase hunger because of the caffine. Which is not good.

I did CUT back from 3-4 Starbuck's lattes/capps/ ect a day to 1 normal cup with some extra stuff. It was hard to do, but it didn't kill me.

I was banded on November 14, 2007 and from the time I was banded until now, I only had about two small cups of coffee. I was a person who had to have a cup of coffee everyday.

Just thought I would add my two cents to the coffee issue. I too had to stop drinking the coffees and diet cokes. However, to my surprise I am not have any issues. Be strong and follow your doctors plan... You will get past it.... I was banded on 3/13/08

Hey this is a good point. When I hear/read the word coffee I think of the old black brewed coffee. If it is a designer coffee... then yeah you can get yourself into trouble with calories, fat and so on. I do know that starbucks offers a skinny latte (90 cal for a tall) and it contains a little bit of Protein. Okay so now you all know one of my entertainment foods on a bad emotional day. I must admit it is better then a box of chocolates. :(

Speaking of Starbucks. I got really hooked on the green tea frappacinos. I loved the Venti ones because it kept me full for so long. That being said, I had to give them up because of the calories. I think they have 600-800 calories in them. I saw a tv show recently that introduced a new book on substituting foods. They said that a Venti strawberry Cream Frap from Starbucks as 1200 mg of sugar in it. As much as 6 ice cream bars. That is why I choose to now have the skinny cinnamond dulce. Its 250 calories but keeps in in my day caloric intake of 1k. I lost 2 lbs this week giving up the green tea frap.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
