Can't give up COFFEE!

Recommended Posts

My doctor says coffee is absolutely fine. I have one or two small cups each day. I would perish without it!!!

I wasn't told to give up coffe either. I have one cup a day in the morning. It is a appetite stimulator though that may be his reasoning. You should ask him...I don't think it has anything to do with streching out your stomach

I was never instructed to give up coffee. I am even allowed to drink soda if it is flat (although, what is the point of flat soda??!! LOL)

I gave up Starbucks Grande Mocha on Jan. 1 to get ready for my surgery. The psychologist told me I had to "retrain" my brain, so whenever I craved the Mocha...I substituted Earl Grey Tea (which I liked anyway.)

I also gave up "morning coffee" on Jan. 1 - that one was a little harder but again I started substituting a strong morning blend of tea and added Creamer so it was almost like coffee. Little by litte, I wanted it less and less until now it's completely gone. Like others have said, it was really hard, lots of headaches. BUT I'm the same amount of alert now in the mornings as I was when I drank 2 - 3 cups of coffee.< /p>

Also, my Dr. said caffeine is too acidic for the smaller stomach pouch that we have after banding and its a dieuritic, which is not good, because he says that lap-banders need as much Water, Water, water as possible.

So...Good Luck!! You can do it!

I never thought about the acidity of the coffee and a smaller pouch. Good point. I limit it to one a day and sometimes none. SODA!!! there is no point to soda at all...I used to drink it all the time and have complete4ly given it up and feel better. Less joint pain. Isn't that funny? Good luck veryone....we're still plugging along

I drink an occassional cup of coffee, but I have one or two cups of tea a day. Why would the nutritionist be ok with tea and not ok with coffee, both have caffeine??? And arent' both a diuretic?

Both are acidic, too, right?

That is strange. Give it more time. I didn't try coffee until yesterday. I work at starbucks so giving it up would be a real challenge. I had a nonfat latte and I handled it fine. I was nervous. Maybe try again in a week or two.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
