I just went grocery shopping. I felt so empowered to be buying good, real, healthy food. After being on the pre and post operative diet, it is an amazing change to be able to eat meats (well, fish) and vegetables again. I filled my cart with more than twice as much produce as I usually do. I got squash, (zucchini, yellow, spaghetti and butternut), green, red and yellow onions, bananas, clementines, apples, mushrooms, and a few other things I'm forgetting. I can't wait to make up some veggie omlettes, have some veggies with the fish I bought. (Talapia, for the first time ever, some pouches of flavored tuna and canned salmon.) I'm still doing okay with not eating sweets. I passed the Easter candy with hardly a thought. That, to me, is a miracle. Empowered is the word that kept coming to me as I shopped. Healthiest shopping trip I've made in years, hands down.

That is an excellent word and one I have felt as well in the grocery store! There are still areas that make me a little weak in the knees, i.e. the bakery, but I just pretend I have blinders on and walk past it.

A word on the packaged, flavored salmon. I got some teriyaki flavored the other day and while it was tasty, it was a bit strong and dry for my liking. I think I am going to focus on getting it fresh from the seafood section and putting some sort of teryaki sauce on top of it. Should be quite a bit more moist and flakey and doesn't take very long to cook in the oven.

What a wonderful experience for you! I'm still eating mostly soft foods so I haven't been on a veggie run but I think I'm actually looking forward to it for the first time in my life. I've been seeing those Zip-Loc steaming bags on the Biggest Loser and keep thinking how delicious those simple, healthy meals look. I think I've been brainwashed! =)

What a great post! Isn't it great to be re-discovering healthy food! I feel like now that I actually CHEW my food instead of inhaling it, I'm learning just how tasty healthy food is! And - this might be weird - but I feel like since I'm eating such a small amount now, my body actually craves healthy things! I ate a salad yesterday at Cracker Barrel - it was like eating lobster! Every bite seemed so crunchy and flavorful.

It's funny how quickly our perspectives change!

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
