heart rate of 10? gulp!

Recommended Posts

Well, I am 3 weeks out and go for my follow up visit with my surgeon today. After my surgery, during my overnight stay, my heart rate dropped to the 40's in the night. I chalked it up to drugs and my beta blocker. Hospitalist comes in the next day, decreases b-blocker, orders EKG, all is good-right? I go home happy.

So he says today- "what did your primary MD do about this heart rate? You know you basically flatlined during surgery- your heart rate went down to 10" WHAT???!! He told me it was a vasovagal reaction (stimulation of the vagus nerve causing severely low heart rate) and I quickly recovered with medications. He also said that any time I get laprascopic surgery to tell them to inflate my ABD very slowly! Well, I guess so. As a nurse, I know vasovagal reactions respond very wellto meds, but I am still thinking it is a good thing I was unconscious at the time. Good to be alive folks!!

Whoa--I would say SO!!! That's a shocker, and a good thing to find out about only afterwards!!

Glad you're still here, cookie! :grouphug:

Wow, glad you came out of it OK. My heart rate was also in the 40's during my hospital stay and it kind of freaked me out. My daughter is a nurse and I asked her to keep an eye on me when I got home.

I watched my mom go through a major heart attack and open heart surgery, so I'm sensitive to any danger signs of heart trouble. That's the main reason I got the band. I'm hoping to NOT walk in her footsteps. She had gastric bypass after her first heart attack, but I think by then the damage was done.

Hi, I’m new here. I’m currently on the liver shrinking diet. So far so good, but I have to say I haven’t found a protein shake I like. Anyone have any suggestions please? My surgery date is September 17th.

Fairlife Core are by far the best. They taste just as they are - chocolate milk. You can either get the 26 grams or the 42 grams (harder to find and more expensive). For straight protein look at Bulksuppliments.com ..they have really good whey proteins and offer auto ship plus they test for purity. No taste or smell...

Fairlife has strawberry, vanilla and of course chocolate. No more calories than other protein drinks. Stay away from Premiere, they're dealing with lawsuits due to not being honest about protein content.
