a little info on protien, a little long...

It's just a little bit about "why" Protein is so helpful in lossing weight. It's a good reference for someone who's new, too.

Protein comes from the Greek word meaning "primary." You need protein to build absolutely every structure in your body -- from fingernails to enzymes to hormones to bones to muscles to neurotransmitters like serotonin. Without protein, dear reader, you would die. (The same cannot be said of dietary carbohydrates, but that’s another story.)

But why is protein so great for weight loss? There are a several reasons. First of all, protein is far more satiating (filling) than carbohydrates. For many people, carbs just stimulate hunger rather than satisfy it. That’s why it’s much easier to eat six bowls of Cereal while watching Friends reruns than it is to eat six steaks. Several studies have shown that eating a higher protein Breakfast results in Fiber and green leafy vegetables to balance the protein. They are also getting their protein from inferior sources like processed deli lunch meats, fast food restaurants and factory farmed animals with high amounts of hormones, steroids and antibiotics. I think it’s critically important to get the best quality meats and fish you can buy -- go organic if possible, and look for "free range" or "antibiotic free" on the label. I have links to companies that produce these high-quality organic meats and toxin-free fish on my website (eggs and poultry from reputable sources and fish free of PCBs and mercury are rarely a problem when balanced with tons of fibrous vegetables, some low-sugar fruits and healthful fats like coconut, flaxseed, olive and macadamia nut oils. Protein at the center of every meal can be one of your best allies in the fight against unwanted pounds

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
