What to expect at nutritionist?

Recommended Posts

I am slowly working my way through the many hoops needed by Tricare Prime to be banded at a MTF.

Today is my appointment with the nutritionist. What can I expect?

I have had to keep a weeks worth of food records on Mypyramidtracker.com. After doing that I see that I eat on average 1700 calories a day. When I go in there will the nutritionist do a "Duh...no wonder you're fat!" (not in that form of wording of course:biggrin:) and want me to be on a lower calorie plan before she will give her okay?

I know no one can predict what any particular nutritionist will do in any specific situation, but has that happened to anyone else?

I have my appointments for "Therapeutic Lifestyle Change" classes next week, the appointment with the surgeon on the 25th (yes or no appointment :huh2:) and then the final hurdle of psychiatry on the 31st.

On my way to Bandland........I hope:thumbup:

My session took 30 minutes with another candidate. She discussed what to eat before being banded and what to expect after. I am in Boston with BIMC we also received a book that took you from day to day what to do before surgery and after surgery step by step which is excellent! The psycho appointment was fun and I learned so much about me and the reason behind why I am eating and why I am 150 pounds overweight. I really enjoyed the appointments and such a learning curve for me. Enjoy!

I didn't like my nutritionist at first because she assumed things about my eating habits. For instance, I wrote down what I ordered at a resturant. I think it was Chevy's, a taco, an enchilada, rice, Beans etc. (What even skinny people get when they order it.) And she assumed I ate it all in one sitting. I didn't. It took me three sittings to down it all. She wa right about the calorie choice though, bad decision. If I could start over again, I would explain my eating habits in more detail and not let her think as she wished because by doing so, she went a different route with my eating issues. Anyway, call him or her on what they say. Make sure they understand your eating habits not "fat people's in general" and you might expect them to expect you to be defensive, mine did and it was kind of combative. I heard the same thing from others dealing with thier own nutritionists. All is good now though.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
