I just got my financing to go through for the band and I'm just so scared of the surgery (I've never had any type of surgery done). My sister got the gastric bypass surgery and she went through hell mentally. I know that the gastric bypass surgery is much more invasive but did anybody go through that (or something like that) before or after they had the lap band surgery?

My band was my first surgery. I had a slight panic attack the morning of surgery, right as they were beginning to do the prep. That's really the only major mental thing right before/after surgery, but I spent about 5 years preparing to do this, so I had an advantage of being in a good place about it, mentally. Often people find they aren't sure how to cope or that they "mourn" the loss of their constant companion food.< /p>

I was extremely nervous about surgery, too. I was desparate, though, and knew that the band was the only choice I had left. There was no way I was getting GB, I have a friend who had it and had the same trouble as your sister (and she looks like death warmed over, to be honest with you!) I was really concerned about the emotional aspects of not being able to rely on my old friend, food. But honestly the small portions have come as a relief to me and I am really enjoying feeling full on such small amounts of food. I appreciate that my doctor is conservative with fills so I was able to adjust slowly to this new way of eating. It was frustrating at first and all I wanted was to just lose this freaking weight! But I am really thankful it was a slow process because it has helped me change my attitude slowly. I think you will do great. Don't be too scared about the surgery - it was not nearly as bad as I thought it was going to be. I freaked out in the pre-op room right before they wheeled me back and had a huge cry... I can honestly tell you, 4 1/2 months later, I am very very glad I went through with it! Good luck to you!

Welcome! I've been documenting my entire lapband process in my blog (link below). Honestly, it has been a super easy and simple process. Yo will do just fine!!!

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
