Caffiene????

Recommended Posts

I was just curious as to why you cant have caffiene? On my dieticians list it states Decaf tea and coffee, but my surgeon even tells me that I can have diet coke if i let if go flat and that has caffiene. I am just wondering if caffiene does anything to the band? :tt2:

Caffeine won't do anything to the band but it can cause dehydration. After surgery it can be hard to get in enough liquid so they probably don't want you to have caffeine. My doctor allowed caffeine but not Diet Coke.

Thank you for replying. I was just wondering because I def. dont want to do anything to mess the band up. I havent and dont plan to drink diet coke, its just confusing when the surgeon says you can have caffiene and the dieticians lists Decaf. I would just like to be able to have tea at a restaurant and lets face it...noone serves decaf tea. Thanks so much for the input.

Maybe your surgeon meant Caffeine-Free Diet Coke. You should tell him that he's sending out conflicting messages.

My dietician told me the same thing and my surgeon told me the opposite. I think I will go with what my surgeon said over the dietician any day. He said drinking caffiene, like coffee, was fine. The dietician said it could erode the band, what? I think if we try to focus on moderation in our choices we should be ok. We can't stop living life now can we, lol. A lil' caffiene here and there won't kill us or the band, IMHO

one thing I have noticed is no 2 doctors say the same thing about caffiene. Some are dead against it, others say its ok in moderation and still others say its just fine.

My cardioligist says to avoid it cause it is a stimulant and raises your heartbeats and causes Water retention. But my PCP says just don't over do it.

Other sources say it retards weight loss so who knows exactly.

I doubt seriously if it can cause a band to erode. As the band is OUTSIDE your stomach and no food actually comes in contact with the band at all.

I would think your more at risk from the carbonation in soda then the caffiene. But I agree you should clarify this more with your doctor.

My pre op diet said tea but didn't say coffee so I went without it. The day of surgery the doc said..pshhtt..you can have coffee. Why did you go without it? SO I drink a cup of coffee each day. It doesn't seem to bother me. They actually gave me coffee in the hospital for Breakfast my first day. So I guess for me it is okay.
