Not the port??

Recommended Posts

I feel so stupid... I went to my first doctor appointment after being banded and what I thought was my port right behind my incision is really the stitches and stuff that hasn't desolved yet.. he said the port is an inch below and under all my fat and I can't even feel it in there yet.. lol. this whole time I've been having people feel my "port" but it's not my port. HA HA.

No worries, I thought my port was a totally different incision for the first 2 - 3 days. I'd say - that's kind of right, at least for me. I can't feel my port just by running my hand over it, but if I push down I can feel it. It feels kind of like a little button or M&M under the skin. Many fills are done with palpitation of the port, so they need to be able to feel them.

You'll also see a lot of people swearing they can feel their band, when actually it's more like their xyphoid process that they've just had too much fat to feel before.

I'm curious, if I can't feel my port, how the heck is the lady going to feel my port on the 25th to give me my first fill? I dont' think it will be done with fluro.. EEKKKKKK....

Most of us can feel our ports, it's just a matter of looking in the right place and knowing what to feel for. Early on I wasn't pushing nearly hard enough to find mine, so I just figured it couldn't be felt.

My surgeon does not use fluoro. I lay on my back while he pushes around the area of the port to locate it. Twinges a bit when he finds it. If he's having a really hard time finding it he may ask us to hold a partial sit up to push the muscle. It's much, much easier to feel laying flat than standing up.

OMG I can do you one better.

Not only was it not where I thought it was... but this "lump" I've had that was hurting and freaking me out, and I was sure was a cyst or a tumor... was ACTUALLY the port.

LOL

OMG, that just made me laugh my butt off! LOL. I layed down earlier and I still couldn't feel mine.. ANd my stomach isn't even that big, I feel some type of hardness, but it doesn't feel like it would be a port though. I wonder when this lump under my incision will go away (the stitches).

Angie, that pic of yours reminds me of CLaire Danes.

Well, whaddya know? I thought that lumpy scar was my port, too! LOL I'm glad I'm not the only one! I tried to find my real port through all my fat but that bad boy is well hidden! I even tried the half sit-up thing that the docs make you do at fills and no luck.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
