1st Consultation Tomorrow!!!!

Recommended Posts

Tomorrow I go for a consultation with the Doctor to see about a Lapband. I am nervous and scared. I have battled with my weight since highschool. I lose, then I gain, and of course I always gain a little more than before. I weight 219 #'s and I am 5'4" tall.

My fears are it will not work. I worry about surgery, will I regret it, do I want something foreign in my body, will I be able to feel it, etc... (??!!??)

Is this normal? Did anyone else have anxious feelings?

I have to admit, I am tired of the rollercoaster dieting. I work soooo hard to lose with minimal eating and jogging, until I completely burn myself out. I know this is only a tool, however it seems like it will be an added bonus.

Replys Please!!

Oh YES I most certainly do remember being anxious and scared and full of doubt about a whole spectrum of issues! LOL What helped me the most is hanging out right here on LBT and reading 'til the wee hours many nights in a row! I'd venture to say that 90% of the 'veterans' here went thru all those same emotions, too. It was a huge leap for ALL of us but here we are....most of us have lost a very good deal of weight and are happy with our bands.

I just figured all these people can't all be wrong! That's what helped me cross over the line and just do it! I'm so glad i did.

Just take it slow. There's no hurry, is there?

Totally normal to have fears, it is surgery. But I knew, for me, it was my last chance to lose the weight, before more of my body deteriorated.

I am happy with my decision. I know the battle with my weight will continue the rest of my life. I have no delusions that the band is a magic wand that will allow me to eat whatever I want and stay thin.

I know I'll have mis-steps along the way. However, I believe if I lose my way, I just have to get back to the basic rules of band eating and I'll be on track again. At points, I expect the band and I will work 50-50 and at times I've worked 70% and the band 30%. We're a team, sometimes I work hard and sometimes the band works hard.

Good luck with yur consultation!

Thank's for all the comforting words.

Shortgal - May I ask, who did your surgery? I am going to Felix Spiegel. I have insurance with United Healthcare and it is covered. (Thank God)

I'm in CT. are you, too? UHC would have covered my WLS, but I was unable to provide the 5 years of documentation. Long story.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
