Post-op how long until you could go out....

Recommended Posts

Trying to get a general idea of how many days I will be in the house recovering. So I am wonderng how long it took you until you ventured out of the house post-op. Of course my surgery is the first priority but I am a busy gal and I hope to get back into a normal routine asap. I'm hoping my age is on my side on this one! :)

I had my surgery on a Monday and by Friday I was out of town walking around ALOT at my daughter's cheer competition. The more I walked, the less sore I became.

I had my surgery on Friday. I was told I could go back to my desk job on Monday but decided to take off until Tuesday. I feel so much better today that I could have gone back. I'm glad I took the extra day though. :)

I had surgery on a Tuesday and was out at Sam's Club and the grocery store on Friday. I took a full 2 weeks off work. I had medical leave approved for that long, so I took advantage of it. I'm sure I could have gone back a lot sooner. Much success on your journey!

I was banded on 3/4, just got out of the house for the first time yesterday. I am stillnot able to drive well and dont think I can sit at a desk for 8 hours either just yet. Planning on going back to work in a couple days if all is well. Hang in there - you will feel better quicker than you think!

I had my surgery on a Wed. Got home from the hospital the same day around 3. Pretty much slept through that morning and a good part of Thursday. Friday I was restless and went to Target so that I could walk around a bit. Saturday we drove out of town to visit my parents and were gone most of the day. Sunday was pretty much business as usual in terms of trips, leaving the house, etc. except that I did not drive since I was still taking the Lortab (didn't really need it, but wanted it in my system in case I did).

Really, Sunday was my worst day. I didn't think I'd be able to work on Tuesday but today I got up really feeling good.

I had surgery on a Friday and had to go to court on Monday. Then on Wednesday I had my 4 hour post-op class required by my doctor. The court date was a bit uncomfortable - I think more because I had to wear real clothes and all my slacks were tight due to post-surgery swelling. The Wednesday class (4 hours) was fine because I was with a bunch of other people who had just had surgery and wore loose fitting sweats. You can pretty much do whatever you feel you want to do, within reason, of course - no marathons or weight lifting. I was told I could drive 24 hours after my last dose of pain meds and I stopped taking them and switched to a non prescription pain reliever on Sunday. They DO want you up and walking so whatever you feel you can do you should. Just remember you will be swollen so not all your clothes will fit and you will be sore, but it is a manageable soreness, not acute pain. My experience was that I could do my normal routine but tired a bit sooner and needed to wear loose clothes. Give yourself the first two days to really just be home and veg. out. After that you'll feel like doing something.

Hazel-eyes, I was banded at 1 pm on a Thursday and 24 hours later I was walking around in a mall (slowly, and on my DH's arm, but still). I did spend most of the weekend inside but I was back at my desk job on Tuesday. My Lortab had run out by then too. I was still sore, especially the port area, but took liquid Tylenol and was just fine. I agree with the above poster about clothes. I didn't wear "real clothes" until probably the following Friday -- luckily I work in a casual environment and could get away with nice loose elastic-waisted pants. Good luck!

A lot of people who get surgery in Tijuana go out shopping in TJ the next day. I was outside the hotel walking around the afternoon after surgery. In fact, our doctor recommends a lot of walking to get rid of the gas they pump into you for the surgery. I did spend most of the day after we got home (3rd day after surgery) napping, but that was mostly because I thought I deserved it, rather than needed it!

I had surgery on a Tuesday (had to stay overnight due to insurance), but once I was released, we went home, I got bored so we went to Frys Electronics and rebuilt our home computer. I say the sooner you get out the BETTER! Also, I started back to work late on Thursday. Keep moving or you will get stiff and achy.

I had a 3 hour drive home the next day (well, I wasn't driving, but you know). I wasn't exactly happy to be in the car, and I kept the pain meds handy. By the 3rd day, I was getting around pretty well, although still a bit of trouble climbing up into our pillow top bed.

I stayed home for 3 days and took my daughter skating on the 4th day. I took a nap weh nI got home. I went back to work on the 6th day, though my job is definitely a sit-down job.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
