Newbie--banded in May of 07, help with acid reflux

Recommended Posts

I have this coughing and spitting some nights. I try to not eat late, sleep on 3 pillows, etc. Last time I went in the nurse practitioner wanted to take out some fill. I told her I thought I could fix it without doing that, but it is still occurring, though not every night. I have protonix I take in the morning, an acid controller (OTC) I take at night. I've even taken prilosec, and/or protonix at night. I know that spicy contributes to it and chocolate, which I really don't eat anyway.

I could use some more help.:)

The nurse was most likely right, you could be too tight. A SLIGHT unfill should be tried. Being too tight can cause reflux whihc is bad for your esophogus and could cause slipping of the band.

Thanks, shortgal. I go next Monday. I think I'll chart what I eat at night, when, and how often it happens.

I had a slight unfil and I could actually feel the acid going back into my stomach. Try a .25cc unfil or even smaller it will make a BIG differance. Jenn

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
