Switching Addictions

Recommended Posts

So far I haven't had any addiction transfer but I know 3 people who have had wls who have.

One person became a compulsive gambler

The second a sex addict

The third addited to Meth.

That's why I am in therapy to address the issues that made me fat in the first place.

Meth is a life ruiner. It ruins your health, your teeth, your life. I would rather be fat. I hate drugs. I have lost so many people to them.

I hoping ams. I want to be at least 250 by feb. next year. That is my reality goal...my hope goal for this year is 220 or so...but I don't think that will happen.

But either way I am happy, I haven't weighed in a while.

I'm not going to lie, food was my crack cocaine! I'm 5 years out and do struggle with other addictions (buying things on E-Bay, eating Oreos (BAD), surfing the internet). I would say yes, you do trade addictions--just find a healthy one like excercising! I actually enjoy walking and biking--I can't believe I'm saying that because I weighed 324 pounds 5 years ago and couldn't even walk around my house let alone the block! Good luck, Rachel

I took up two new things.... crocheting and buying yarn, books etc. I have a huge stash of yarn and pattern books now. I made 5 afghans, about 40 dishcloths, a dog sweater, etc. It could be worse... I could be gambling!

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
