ALL food hurts. Am I too tight?

Recommended Posts

I got a fill last Wednesday. I am confident that the swelling has went down in the last 5 days. My problem is that ALL food IS PAINFUL. It feels like everything is getting stuck. If anything sits in my pouch it hurts. I can feel everything go down. It not just uncomfortable, it is painful. I am being very conscious when taking my bites and chewing very, very well. Things that are very soft like ramen noodles and hamburger do not go down smoothly. It also feels like there is trapped air in my stomach and when the food goes through the stoma, the air is finally let out. The pain can lasts anywhere from 15 seconds to 3-4 minutes. Does this mean I am too tight? HELP! Sometimes, if I wait 3-4 minutes in between bites I don't get the pain but it seems pretty unreasonable to have to wait that long! Any suggestions, opinions or advice will help.

P.S. 3cc's total in my band and 4 cc's is allowed.

Sounds like you are for sure too tight. Call your doc's office tomorrow and schedule an slight unfill. Even .1cc removal will make a huge difference!

I agree that it sounds like you are too tight, but I would like to suggest that you get on liquids and mushies for 2-3 days before you go for an unfill. When I get a fill my band is very, very finicky for 2 weeks...it gets tighter and tighter. This last fill I finally got that all figured out and stayed on mushies for 2 whole weeks...and that made a huge difference in my adjustment to the fill. Now I am quite happy with my restriction, whereas if I had done as before I would have had to go back for an unfill.

Give it a try (if you are so inclined) and then add solid foods back very, very gradually. If you get stuck or PB, then back on mushies for a day.

I am the same way. I got a fill last Tues and have had trouble with everything including a popscile and sometimes Water. I am calling my Dr. tomorrow to go in for an unfill. I have lost 7.5 lbs since last Monday simply because I have not been able to eat and if I have ate anything I slime really bad.....Friday nite and tonite I was able to eat some Soup and actually keep it down....there was a little pain with eating it but not too bad. Still going to call the Dr. tomorrow and would suggest you do the same it sounds as if you and I are in the same boat. Good luck

Definately sounds like you are too tight. But check with your doctor. My band is not finicky like yours sounds like it is, but you do need to be able to eat.

Well went this morning for a slight unfill and she didn't even take out 1/2 cc and wow what a difference I feel so much better. I was able to come home and eat a 1/2 c of Soup and it didn't get stuck, I didn't slime and I am full so I know I didn't loose any restriction. I feel so much better.

did you start eating solids to soon. I am liquid 2 weeks after my surgery to allow myself to get used to the band

I wouldn't touch noodles, especially right after a fill, and hamburger is one of the hardest things for me to eat. Take it easy on liquids for a couple days to let everything settle down. As long as you are getting enough fluids into you, and not pbing, you are probably not doing any damage.

Sometimes it takes me 3 or 4 weeks to get past the point you are at. I just have to stick with Soups and very soft foods for a while, and then all of a sudden the pain and stuck feeling are gone.

wait a minute, you have 3 cc in a 4 cc band and you are just two months past surgery???? That seems awfully tight awfully fast to me.

Oh gosh! I didn't catch that she was only 2 months post op! Are you sure you have 3cc's in ?? That IS a lot of fill in a very short time! No wonder you're swollen!

My fills went something like this:

Surgery - April 4, 2007

initial fill 1.5 cc (end of May)

2nd fill 0.5cc (June)

3rd fill 0.5cc (July)

4th fill 0.2cc (Aug)

5th UNfill 0.1cc (Sept)

6th fill 0.2 cc (Feb)

Total, 11 months post op = 2.8cc

My band holds 4 as well. Truthfully I think 3ccs in a 4cc band is very agressive for a first fill. I would go back in and have at least .5 taken out. For a long time I was at 2.9ccs in mine and did very well. I have 3.2 in now. Good luck trying to find that spot!

I had an overfill one time, I went in on a Friday had a fill and could not get ANYTHING, not even Water to stay down, I went back on Monday morning after a weekend of AWEFUL acid reflux and no liquids all weekend and had lost 9.5lbs. So, make sure you can at least get fluids on board. Jenn

My opinion, and I'm not a doctor, is you are too tight. food should still be enjoyable and not torture. I PB a few times a week and I hate it. I would not like to live with everything I eat hurting, that would be miserable. I think you need an unfill because what tends to happen is you will start eating only soft stuff and the band doesn't work well when you only eat soft food.

For all that have tightness , there is a test you may do to check it out. Take a warm to hot Fluid to expand the band. It will allow you to get things down,, if you still have pain after that,, then see the Doc asap,, at 4 months,, you shouldnt be over 1.75 to 2 cc inserted

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
