Central Ohio Get Together - April 12, 2008

Recommended Posts

Hello!

My name is Courtenay and I am currently researching lap-band surgery in Ohio and Mexico. I live in Cleveland and plan on attending this Columbus meeting. I would LOVE to talk to anyone and everyone about their surgeries, doctors, experiences, etc.

I am leaning towards having my surgery in Mexico due to pricing but fear the "fills" aspect and having to continually go back and forth. Has anyone every received a fill from a doctor different than who gave them the lap-band?

Any help/comments from anyone would be great!

Thanks!

C

Hi Courtenay, welcome! I look forward to meeting you next month at our meeting!

Hey guys! The 12th is coming soon (yah!) and the 7th is just around the corner! I am looking forward to getting together sooo much. It is so nice to chat with you guys--everyone is so "real" that you feel right at home! I am also excited to be on the "banded side" this time...and it looks like we are going to have a few new people, too! It just keeps getting better!!!

Niki,

I can't wait... it seems like the 7th is so far away! I'm excited for the fashion show, but more excited to meet up with our group... LOL!

Niki - so glad you are banded. Can't wait to see you in April. You will probably start feeling the loss by then.

Courtenay, Welcome to the group. I'm probably bringing Sonya who is considering the band and options right now. You will like the people. It is a good group.

Thank you Susan. I will be bringing my husband (for moral support, and because he is freaking-out about me getting any kind of surgery) so I am hopeful that after meeting some fellow "banders" both of our minds will be at ease.

I just want to say that I think it's great that you guys have developed this support system and continued aftercare/support for one another. It's a LIFETIME commitment and one that does not end after getting banded, but just begins the healthy journey we are all striving to start and continue.

Thank you everyone for the warm welcome.

For our new folks who are considering coming, the value I immediately found from meeting the gang was I had been to one of my hospital's monthly support group meetings and it was predominantly RNY or GB patients and while I sat and chatted with a couple people around me each time, I didn't make the connection I have to our group. Plus for the newbies, we decided to have the meeting in a public place so it wasn't threatening to anyone to come to the mall food court area that they could come and go as they wanted to.

SpecialK,

That's a great explanation of our group... I never imagined at our first meeting that I would love this group of people the way I do! Our meetings are truly the highlight of my month. The fact that we have two gatherings in April just thrills me to no end!

Speaking of which, do you happen to know what time the fashion show is on the 7th?

Glad to hear you are doing well!

SpecialK and Heather,

I'm like you. Our group is wonderful.

The support group at the Mount Carmel East was worthless to me, except as a diversity lesson. Most were people who were there for the one required meeting. It was a fashon show too. Last April at Mt. Carmel. Interesting to see the "after" but I was way to interested in finding out what was ins and outs long before the "after".

Our group actually is people who are like me. Wow, there are people like me going through the weight loss and banding. Plus the other normal issues in life. Great support.

Susan

Just a little over 2 weeks until our next get together... and my clothing box is growing full! I just finished going through my pants/capris and was amazed at how many were too big. I can't wait to share them with you all next month. I also have at least one pair of shorts to get someone started with summer. I'm going to have to dig out my summer things before then and see if I can add to the box. I just love it!

Today I hit the 45 pounds lost mark... I hope to be celebrating 50 pounds gone at our next meeting... fingers crossed!

It is so nice to see the bandsters moving along at about 10 lbs lost a month - Heather banded at late December and here it is about 4 months and she's at 45 lbs down! WOW! Same with OHJuli is about 1 year exactly out and I think her last ticker had her down 110 lbs in a year! And DebbieK's ticker is showing her down 80 lbs and I think her banding was late September.

I'm so glad I chose LB over the RNY because I think the results of those who are committed to it are showing they can be great! Keep up the good work everyone. I'm inspired by ya!

I'd like to hear any Mushies recipes or things that you guys have tried that really hit the taste buds. I'm a little worried about starting to eat real food again and see a temporary gain but I know that others have said that's just part of the adjustment phase. See you all on the 12th!

K,

I would take cottage cheese and pizza sauce and whip them together in my Magic Bullet, and microwave it.

Also, I mushed up soft meatloaf with chicken broth to where it was an oatmeal texture. That saved my life! Again, I microwaved it. I liked my food warm when doing mushies, I think because the look of it was gross.

HTH.

I joined BariatricPal in 2008 & I FINALLY made the descision to have WLS!! I'm so excited & not sure what I need to do to get the ball rolling, but I made an appointment with my PCP for 7/19. It's a start I guess.

I've been dreaming about it for 30 years or so. It's time to make it happen!

I joined yesterday when I was struggling with this preop diet...
It typically comes and goes, the hard times and easier times. I'm on day 6 of 14  shakes, water, sf Popsicles and jello. And I might actually be losing my mind. But, oh dear lord has the fear set in. Not about the surgery itself, but life afterwards. If I feel this crappy on the preop diet, am I going to feel like this forever after?
I know most of the answers are no, not forever. It might be worse after for a while, then get better. I know it's a more of a mental challenge than physical after the first couple weeks of healing. I get all of that. But I'm starting to feel scared about losing myself afterwards.
It might be my hormones or desire to chew something salty talking.. It may go away soon or tomorrow.. I can hope, anyway. But right now.. The fear is real.

And this liquid diet can bite me.

Fear is normal, but if it makes you feel any better, I'm 4.5 months post-op and the pre-op diet was by far the hardest part of the whole process. There will be challenges and a lot of new things to learn, but I can honestly say at this point I feel so much more "back to normal" and was even able to go on a week-long vacation with my kids without stressing over it. It's so worthwhile.

@NickelChip This actually does make me feel better! Thank you so much! After the onslaught of Covid, we've all had to deal with a "new normal", so I know it's possible. It's just the fear and frustration in this moment that makes me question if I can find another "new normal" afterwards. The thought of just a few more months seems daunting some times, but I really do appreciate input and real experience. I'll use that to get me through for a few more hours! LOL. Thank you so much! And I'm glad everything is going so well for you! ❤️

I started my 10 day pre op diet yesterday I need flavor!! I'm not big on the chocolate protein shakes so I just got to use up what I have was thinking about freezing it to make it like a ice cream so its something I can chew a little. Idk this is hard but I know I can do it just need to find new things to try

You can try. I've read other people have had good results with protein-shake popsicles, etc. My personal experience with it? Sucked.

I tried making 'fudgesicles' with a couple different flavors of a premade shake, as well as a protein powder I blended myself and all of them came out revolting? The powder ones, all the protein sunk to the middle; the premade shakes, the popsicle had a disgusting texture and the protein seemed to leave a weird fluffy film on the outside? I couldn't stomach it.

Maybe look into flavoring additives? I was able to have sugar-free coffee /soda syrup flavorings, sugar-free drink flavorings and baking additives like almond, rum or pepperment extract. The extracts helped me the most as they added no extra sweetener.

On the other hand, if you can get your hands on an unflavored/unsweetened protein powder, the syrup flavorings are perfect. I love to use Boost "Just Protein" (which is unflavored) with milk and a Chai-flavored sugarfree syrup.

        Good luck!
