Anyone have a sleep study done?

Recommended Posts

So I went to my pulmonologyst on thursday and she told me I seem like i'm in excellent health besides my weight, but she asked me if I snore and I said well if I'm sleeping on my back I breath heavier and maybe lightly snore, however I am single and can't confirm that 100%. So she's sending me for a sleep study do they give you sleep aids for these tests? I really don't think I'm going to be able to sleep with probes all over me in a strange place. Also I'm a little bummed out because now with having to have this test my next appt with that doc is not for another 5 weeks, and I really was going to have all my appt done by wed this week so now this is holding me up from getting a surgery date. I asked if there was any way I could get back to see her sooner but they said no. I know it's not that big of a deal but now that purs me at late april maybe even may and I have a 10 vacation planed in may. arg I really just widh I could get a date so I had some kind of clue. Well having said that back to the sleep study any stories anyone can share please:scared2:

p.s. plus on my way to get the chest xray my car died I think its the starter but that made the day so much worse.

Trust me I didn't think I would be able to sleep myself. I felt like I had just gotten to sleep and they woke me up and put a CPAP machine on me. My doctor made me go without caffine or chocolate and not take a nap for the day. By midnight even with all them wires I was sawing logs.

I have felt 300 times better since getting diagnosed with sleep apnea and sleeping nightly with my cpap.

You'll fall asleep eventually, and then you'll probably have to be on a CPAP machine for a couple weeks before you can have the surgery and until you lose a bunch of weight. Then you'll have to have another sleep study to get off the stupid thing! The sleep studies cost about 1000 dollars, so I hope you have insurance. (Can you tell that I hate the whole rigamarole?!)

I'm having one Wednesday. I think I blogged about it.

Anyhow, I too told them I DON'T snore and I thought I would only need PFT's. Just before the visit was over the pulmo told me he sends everyone considering this surgery to have a sleep study.

I have a hrd time sleeping in a strange place.

I need my pillows, I use three for sleeping. One behind my back, on between my knees and one under my head.

I am a side/stomach sleeper so having wires on me is freaking me out a bit.

I also don't have any button front jammies which they told me I needed. ACCESS I guess.

I should say that I have a DRAWER full of adorable button up jammies but they, along with so many other things, DON'T FIT!

I'm also worried about doing something "inappropriate" during my sleep.

I have VERY vivid dreams!

I'll let you know how it goes.

I have a hrd time sleeping in a strange place.

They generally have these set up kindof like hotel rooms. Very decent bed, nice linens, pictures, TV, etc.

I need my pillows, I use three for sleeping. One behind my back, on between my knees and one under my head.

Then by all means bring them with you!

I am a side/stomach sleeper so having wires on me is freaking me out a bit.

I'm a side sleeper too, but I found sleeping on my back wasn't too bad for one night.

I also don't have any button front jammies which they told me I needed. ACCESS I guess.

I can't recall having anything on my chest....I had a finger thing for pulse rate and then the electrodes on my head. If you don't have any jammies, just wear a comfortable soft button down shirt of some kind.

I'm also worried about doing something "inappropriate" during my sleep.

I have VERY vivid dreams!

Don't be....they've seen it all and heard it ALL....and I mean absolutely ALL. I actually talked in my sleep during my test...and had a semi-recollection of it. These people do this all the time and I never felt the least bit embarassed or ill at ease.

I just went for my 2nd night for the sleep study. The first night I only slept abour 3 hours split up. I REALLY tried but...I brought 3 pillows, my faded but soft night shirt w/buttons like a polo shirt, and my favorite down comforter!!!

Lucky for me, the second night...(two weeks later) I had the same wonderful tech...Sharon!! So, she started me with the "nose pillows". I got to watch tv to get used to it and did great. Then YAWN, I was tired so nighty nite nite I went.

Well, when she increased the air BAM!!! I startled awake....Did I mention I am claustrophobic??? so ...as not to disrupt the millions of wires, I resisted the urge to pull the mask off...instead I called for her. Yeah she came right in, took off the nose thing and unhooked me from the wall.

So then. . . we decided to try the mask that encircles my nose but not "up the nostrils". MUCH BETTER for me! I slept for about 3-4 hours..not sure. THEN I had to pee...so she unplugged me AGAIN and said, "Well, that is enough data"

YEA!!! I went home at 5:15 am....and slept until 11:00...

They told me my apnea was mild?????

By the way, the second night the wires and me were old friends...it was the machine I had to reckon with!

MANTRA...the band is worth it...the band is worth it....

So, do I like the cpap machine??? Death is worse. I guess I'll get a machine soon...Hope I breathe in the meantime!

Well, I received my approval for the LapBand surgery, and I was so excited. I called surgeon to set up my surgery date, and the staff told me I needed a sleep study first because my chart shows that I have signs of sleep apnea. I said, "what the ....! Why didn't anyone tell me three months ago?!?" So, tomorrow I find out if my sleep study is approved.

What I am wondering is if my sleep study shows that I have sleep apnea, then what, they don't do the surgery? What is the process? Does anyone know?

Thanks for any help...

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
