def don't feel bad! You are NOT alone. I cheated too... with a donut one day, and chocolate cake the next!!

You'll be fine. My doctor didn't even asked how well I followed the diet.

My BMI is 57. My doctor won't do the lapbaband until my BMI is 50. I am so depressed. If I could get rid of 40 pounds I wouldn't need the lapband to help. Everyday I start out with a shake. By mid-morning I am starved. This just stinks.

They told me the reason for this pre-op diet is something to do with your liver.

That something is to shrink your liver so it can be safely moved out of the way when they put the band on you. If your liver is enlarged from not following the diet some doctors will close you right back up after opening you and not do the surgery or some may go through with it and risk the chance of injury to the liver and the ramifications from said injury.

I just don't understand how it is that some doctors can scare their patients into staying on the pre-op diet by saying they can't do the surgery if they cheat, while other doctors don't put thier patients on any pre-op diet at all. Some eat right up to the day before and everything goes fine. Not to give anyone a reason to cheat, but I just don't think it's right for doctors to scare their patients this way.

It's not really about if u cheat or not... It is how much your Dr. told you that u have to loose before the procedure if any, and it depends on how fatty you liver is. Everyone has fat diffrent places some more in the tummy area and some less like myself... so it really depends.. I wouldnt even call it CHEATING.... Because it is hard to stick to a all liquid diet for any long period of time...

They can tell by looking at your liver during surgery how well you followed the diet. They don't need to ask.

Just remember that being hungry is NOT an emergency and that this is a very short period of time.

It's important to follow your doctor's instructions, why else would you consult them?

At the pre-opt class, my doctor told us that is we cheat, we will have the surgery rescheduled.

I haven't started my pre-op diet yet, but I am nervous about it and I feel your pain. the only thing I think that will keep me motivated are my doctor's stories . . . he brags about his patients who do well and how quickly and easily the surgeries go when he can tell that they followed the liquid diet. He also likes to scare me with the stories of the other people who he can tell didn't follow the diet and how they had more pain during recovery because the surgeries were more difficult. I'm totally a whimp, so I'm kind of freaked. Hopefully I'll be scared enough to stick with it. Fingers crossed.

Good luck to you.

I just looked through all of my paperwork, my surgeon wants ten pounds lost before surgery and requires the two week liquid diet. I just got approved yesterday, so I don't have a surgery date yet but I plan on getting a head start on the diet so I'll be more used to it when I do have to do it. I know I can lose ten pound in two weeks, I've done that so many times already that I feel like it'll be a breeze.

Don't feel bad. I started the 2 week pre-op diet on May 15th last week. I did great until Monday the 19th. Had Jack-in-the Box tacos and a coke....OH DEAR:sad:, and that was right after my final surgeon appt. Tried not to beat myself up. I've had a few other slip ups but just keep my focus. I know that after surgery I'm done. He didn't ask how I'd been doing on the diet. This next week my plan is to stick with it. Even though we are going away for Memorial weekend to see family for a big graduation. Ought to be hard but would be even harder if my hubby was home planning a big BBQ. I'll take all my Snacks and shakes with me to keep in the frig at the hotel. I just keep my eyes on the prize. It is so terribly hard to stick to it though. I reach out to this forum for help too. It's the best!! Thank you all for the great info. Surgery is May 29th at 1pm!!! :blushing:

Hi, I’m new here. I’m currently on the liver shrinking diet. So far so good, but I have to say I haven’t found a protein shake I like. Anyone have any suggestions please? My surgery date is September 17th.

Fairlife Core are by far the best. They taste just as they are - chocolate milk. You can either get the 26 grams or the 42 grams (harder to find and more expensive). For straight protein look at Bulksuppliments.com ..they have really good whey proteins and offer auto ship plus they test for purity. No taste or smell...

Fairlife has strawberry, vanilla and of course chocolate. No more calories than other protein drinks. Stay away from Premiere, they're dealing with lawsuits due to not being honest about protein content.
