Filled too soon - now over filled?

Recommended Posts

Hello, I was banded on 1/11/08. I had my first fill on 2/19/08 and it was 3cc's (i have a 10cc band) My dr was going to be away so they needed to get me in for another fill which was Monday 3/3! Thats 13 days after my first fill - I got 2 cc's additional and so I am at 5cc's now. He put me on liquids for the rest of monday and the next 2 days. I did fine with Protein Shakes, broth and carnation instant Breakfast. I did have major heart burn and an aweful discomfort in my chest area when i'd drink. Today, Thursday I had coffee in the morning and some Soup for lunch, it did go down, they only thing thats really bothering me is this pain I have in my chest. it's like a tighening feeling. Is this normal? Maybe i'm overfilled? I keep thinking that it'll get better every day cause I do feel much better than I did Monday evening. I just wanted to get others opinions. I'm keeping foods and liquids down. The heartburn did go away. I'm not burping as much as I was. Should I give it time? My next appt is 4/1. Also, I find that I need to stand while I eat. If I sit It feels like the food doesn't go down but when i stand it goes down fine. I'd appreciate everyones thoughts on this. It helps to talk to others who have the band and may know what it's like to have these problems. THANKS!! Maryanne

Has someone lost their marbles! You should only get a fill when your doc is available for the next 3 days in case you need them....not get it done and they leave.

Did you even need another fill? If so, 13 days is not too soon. My doctor allows them every 10 days if you don't feel enough restriction. If you didn't need a fill and they wanted to get you in, I would be concerned. It doesn't really sound like you are too tight. I have a lot of those symptoms just after a fill because I am tighter from swelling. You need to start eating solid dense Protein and see if you can get that down. Take really small bites, chew until the food is mush, wait a few seconds before taking the next bite and see what happens. The only way you can really tell if there is a problem is to eat real food (not soup) and since your fill was Monday you should be eating real food. If solid food gives you trouble, call the doctor. (if he's still out of town they have to have someone available to help you - like a nurse practitioner) Also, make sure the standing up thing isn't just a mental thing (I'm not calling you crazy, but sometimes we get these notions in our head that have no physical reason...I am as guilty of it as the next person...) try sitting down while you eat the food because if you really do have to stand you are probably too tight!!!

Hi kbinaz, I did need the fill. I didn't have much restriction so a fill was necessary. I just ate some cottage cheese - seems OK. I am still having the tightening feeling and still have the heartburn. Is there somethig I can take for the heartburn! I've never had it before and it's so uncomfortable!!!! I feel that I just need to give it time. I'll admit I was nervous to start real food. I'll try more tomorrow. So bottom line, give it time, right? I guess i'm just concerned and I needed to hear what others have gone through and what they have to say. Thanks!!!!!

I personally would not eat solid food if I had heartburn and pain after a fill. I would stay on liquids until I could see the Dr. ( or one in the group). If it lasted more than the three days of liquids you were supposed to be on, I would have gone back for a slight unfill.

These things happen, you can get swelling around the band after fills. 3 cc's and 2 cc's would be an aggressive fill for my Dr's office. I got 2 cc first time and then 1 cc each time after.

Heart burn and pain is an indication it's too tight and being too tight is not a good thing.

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
