New and lots of questions

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone

I have decided to research and if all goes ok get this procedure. I am going through all the previous posts to catch up on things that have already been asked and answered. I guess my initial question/concern is to just hear and read others' experiences with this procedure. On the top of my list of questions is:

(1) Will my Tufts PPO pay for this surgery or a portion of it

(2) What is the recovery period really like

(3) How much are you expected to lose per month

(4) Anything else I should be asking or

Thanks so much - Lori

(1) Will my Tufts PPO pay for this surgery or a portion of it Ask them? They can tell you better than we can.

(2) What is the recovery period really like Most of the posted stories are accurate for the poster. Everyone's recovery is different. I took 2 days to leave the house, 3 days to go out of town, 5 days to return to work.

(3) How much are you expected to lose per month Average loss 4 - 8 lbs/month. This is going to vary a LOT.

(4) Anything else I should be asking or Any other questions you have.

(1) Will my Tufts PPO pay for this surgery or a portion of it - As Wheetsin stated, you'll need to call your insurance. It depends on what company you work for and what the guidelines are they require. Some require a certain BMI.

(2) What is the recovery period really like - I was great by day 5 and going to the movies. Days 2,3,and 4 I was really too sore. Days 2 and 3 my hubby had to help me in and out of bed, like laying down and raising up because my stomach was too sore. Depending on your size, when I walked my belly would jiggle and it hurt. It hurt taking deep breaths, coughing, and sneezing.

(3) How much are you expected to lose per month - Depending on how big you are. Most of my friends lost 10 pounds a month, but that was because they were bigger... starting out at 300-400 pounds... I think you lose more when you are bigger, but again, some might only lose 5 pounds a month.. 5 is a healthy and good amount.

(4) Anything else I should be asking or - there are many questions to ask, but the first question should be asked to your insurance if they don't cover it, you need to ask yourself if you are willing to do self pay for this surgery and what are your options.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
