Are you looking for the BariatricPal Store? Go now!

Do you buy any clothes while your weight is transitioning down?

Recommended Posts

I am at a point in my weight loss where my old clothes are looking big and baggy. I want some new clothes, but am assuming they will only fit for a couple of months. What a waste of money! What do you do? But just a few inexpensive pieces and wear them all the time? Get your old clothes altered? I don't have a ton of money to spend on clothes right now, but I want to look nice, and show off my new figure a bit.

oh dear... yeah, i bought waayyyyyyyy to much. WAY too much..

if you have a consignment shop near you, they are usually good. i went to the Avenue primarily. signed up for their email lists and they used to do a TON of coupons x% off things even on sale... saved tons that way.

good luck and congrats on your loss!!

Like LJM said...the Avenue. They have some good sale items right now. I am down about 45lbs and really needed some things but didn't want to over-do it cuz knew I would only wear them for awhile. Bought 5 tops at 14.99 each and a couple of slacks. It will get me by. We also have a nice consignment shop in our small town and picked up a few things there. The worst for me is getting bras to fit right now. PITA! Hey...all this is not a bad problem to have! At least we are losing.

I've gone down a clothes size as well so last night I went to wal mart and went to the clearance racks.. I got a pair of pants for 5 bucks and a shirt for 4 bucks... Luckily I have tons of other clothes in sizes like 14-24, but I only had one pair of black pants and they were way too big for me... So, try wal mart. Oh, try Ross as well. I found an elastic wasted skirt there for only 7 bucks the other day. Size 2x.. That will fit me for quite a long time since it has an elastic waist.

As I go down one size I will buy black pants, jeans, and a black wrap dress at each size. Those get me by for work and casual events. Other than that I don't buy specialty pieces that will only last me a few weeks. Once spring comes around, I am going to do a big shopping trip!

well i have decided to put aside some money every month so when i get to my goal size, i have plenty of cash to go shopping! and for the actual transition, i am going to Walmart to buy jeans and tops since that is the cheapest place to buy clothes. but a consignment shop or thrift store is a good idea as well. and then as i outgrow my old clothes, i send them back to the thrift store if they are still in good condition...

I'm actually watching a number of items on Ebay right now (I make sure they're inexpensive: pantsuit for $9.99, etc)!

My cousin gave me a $50 gift certificate for Christmas at Boscov's and I'm going shopping Good Friday with a (fashion knowledgeable and thin) girlfriend. I know I'll be buying knit elastic-waist pants because they always seem to expand and contract with your bod! I have some of those now that the waist fits me fine but the pants themselves are baggy as all get out!

My boss's daughter had bypass and he said she went to the Salvation Army and Good Will for "interim clothes", and my Bariatric Center does have a clothing exchange where you can take your old clothes and pick out others for no $...:cursing:

Regardless of anything else, it's a great quandary to be in!!!

I have been buying all along, going from a size 20 to a 10 I needed to! Just hit the clearance racks at Macy's and Sear's, they have some really good buys and luckily for me they carry petites. It is so nice to be able to shop off the rack now and have the stuff actually fit. Good luck and happy shopping!

That's a good question.

Of course you can.

But frankly it wasn't in my budget. I went from 22 to a 6. So can you imagine the costs of size 20s, then 18s, then 16s, then 14s, to 12/10/8/ and now 6?

I can't afford it!

I wore my 20+ until I was a 14/16, yes they were baggy but who cares! I went to Walmart and got those $8 elastic waist jeans, a turtle neck, white, and 2 sweaters/jackets.

I wore those until I got to a 8. Now I went back and got size 8 pants, and then a size 6 pant....more turtle necks and 2 cheapy jackets.

This weekend I go to Vegas and plan on going to Nordys and Macys to get my new wardrobe...I'm done!

I haven't had my surgery yet but I've already gone from a tight 24 to a very tight (help me I cant breathe) 18 pants and a 22/24 shirt to a tight 14/16 shirt. I wore my 24's til they slid of my hips and I had to hold them up. Then I purchased a pair of jean, black pants, tan pants and a skirt. I've also bought a couple of shirts to wear.

That's my game plan until I get to my goal weight. When I can't wear the pants anymore I will buy just a couple (and hit the sales racks for them) and wear my shirts til they are just to baggy anymore.

I want to save all my money for the goal. I already told my husband that he better watch out as when I get to goal (and have my TT) I plan on burning everything in my closet and starting from scratch. CANT WAIT

One of the first things I bought was a belt! I did have several pairs of pants altered recently. With business meetings and the like, I still need to look professional. My tailor is a bit pricey - but much cheaper than spending $120 on a new pair of slacks that will fit for a few months.

My recommendation: have a tailor alter the nicer pieces and then shop some clearances for some good basics. If I find a style I like and it's on clearance then I'll buy an extra in the next size down.

I only ebay if I know exactly the designer and how it fits me - I've wasted a lot of money on ebay buying something that didn't fit right.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
