Struggling with Liquids Two Weeks Post Op

Recommended Posts

I am on my second week of liquid phase. I found myself last night taking a bite of regular food as I still have to cook for my family. I am scared that I have messed up my band but it was really soft food. What will this do to my band. I am determined I am not going to do that again. I am going to stay with the program but I am hungry now. The first week I did not have a problem but now it is hell.

I should tell you that I still think you should follow your own Drs advice. He might sew the band in differently or something. But don't worry about what you can't undo.

If you are having a hard time on the liquids, I'd also mention it to your doctor and he might allow you to eat some softer foods a bit sooner. I had an awful 5 days on liquids (all my numbers dropped really low and it messed with my hormones - got really freaky!), so my doctor moved me right into the soft food stage. I'm not having any problems at all. Call him if you need to and see what he says!

Call your doctor. I called mine today because all of a sudden I was so hungry today (6 days post op). He said I could start mushies if I wanted to and they went down ok. I hadn't even start full liquids, so I went with cream Soup for dinner tonight and didn't even finish 1/2 cup and I'm still full. I'm surprised how much difference the full liquids made over clears.

:cursing:got my band Monday 3/3/8. What Hell I am going through. I had some serious hernias (11 total) from a previous abdominal surgery in 2004 (I had diverticulitis and had 10 inches of my large intestine removed) and a botched hernia repair the following year(2005) because of the strained incision. I got a staph infection and almost died I even had Cadaver skin grafted in place to help hold my stomach together.. I went into this banding procedure knowing that I would have to get the hernias repaired. My Doctor- Patterson -spent 4 hours applying the kevlar mesh to the inside of my stomach wall and separating the intestines from the mess of scar tissue. I spent about 4 1/2 hours on the table. I am so sore! I wondered if I had done the right thing but I guess my hernias were pretty severe. I have been doing well on the liquids and Protein Drinks also liquid Calcium and liquid multi-vitamins. It is hard getting 3 litres of Water in a day when you are sipping little by little. I have been able to keep my pain manageable and have been getting plenty of rest the last couple of days. I am just now feeling like I did the right thing. Pain sucks. this pic is some of the bruising from the hernia repairs. The big scar above the belly button is from the open suction wound healing resulting from the staph infection. It was already there. Doc Patterson did a huge repair on my stomach and I appreciate it. Now that I'll be losing weight it will pay off.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
