hello All! This is my first post. I wanted to find out from all the veteran banders.. One of my main motivations is to have a child. I have PCOS and i have been told if i can just get some weight off then i should be able to concieve with no problems.

How long after the band is it safe to get pregnant?

Thanks so much for everybody's thoughts and answers...

I think it depends on you and what the doctor says. I know my doctor says typically that you have to wait at least two years after any weight loss surgery before getting pregnant. My friend had gastric bypass, waited 3 years, she said she's glad she waited that long.

Good Luck!

That's a good question to ask your surgeon. Fertility is definitely increased with the surgery. Once you get pregnant, the band will be emptied. Some OB/GYN's want it emptied ASAP while others allow gradual emptying as the fetus grows.

Wondering if anyone knows if you have to have a c-section if you are banded?? Thanks!

My surgeon said that it is extremely common for him to get a call within 6 - 8 months from women who've tried to conceive and fail prior to WLS, who learn they are pregnant. He also said that as long as the woman takes care of herself, it is safe after a minimum of 6 months. Different surgeons and Docs will obviously have a different opinion on that! Thats was one of my major reasons for having the surgery, and I also have PCOS. Good Luck!

My surgeon advises that pregnant women can keep their fill as long as they are able to meet caloric requirements and not having issues with sickness.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
