Recommended Posts

Hey Yaz, Seems you're over that bad period you had in the beginning. You were freaking out a bit, but you got past that time. Glad things are better for you now! What color dress will you be wearing?

Hi Yaz.

Good to hear from you again. i'm being banded at the end of this month and very nervous about it. I have a feeling I may have the same issues that you had in the beginning. How long did it take for you to start feeling better about your band? Are you happy with your decision now?

Good job Yaz. You'll feel so good when you start buying smaller clothes. It's such a boost to our self esteem when our clothes become too big!

Yeah I guess I'm over that BAD period. I'm praying that once I start eating solids tomorrow everything will work out ok. I'm a little nervous I don't want to get anything stuck. I'm wearing a coreset( spelled REALLY wrong lol ) and a skirt with a trail and its navy blue....really pretty. My best friend made me get it two size smaller so I really need to lose some weight..:)

Navy will be very flattering.

Just go slow with the eating and maybe try softer foods first ( like meatball consistency)and then gradually go to really solid foods ( like grilled/baked chicken). Take small bites and chew carefully and then you'll know.

I always get afraid after a fill trying real food all over again, too.

don;t worry, you'll get into that smaller dress.

Hello everyone,

I had surgery done on march 24 2008 and only after one week I had it removed, because I felt horrible. I felt weak, chest pains or gas and acid reflux, I guess and just overwhelmed with the liquid diet. I just couldnt over bear the feeling that I was going thru so my surgeon just agreed to take it out.

It has been about 2 weeks since he removed it and I feel normal, but know that I think about it I feel that I made a mistake having it taken out.

I want to know if reflux, gas or chest pains and weakness feelings are all normal after the surgery is done? and if so how long does it last?

Thanks,

marcel

Yaz, make sure you take itty bitty tiny bites at first and chew until it's liquid and you'll be fine. You'll be so happy when the scale starts moving down and you're buying littler clothes!

Yes, that is all normal after surgery and for most people it only lasts about a week. The liquid diet can be hard to get used to, but as soon as you're able to eat mushy food and not be as hungry, everyone has been thrilled with their band for the most part.

This is so sad. The original poster felt the same way and seems to have had a change of heart.

I wish your surgeon had suggested you wait a month before removing it.

It's normal to feel bad, depressed and hurt after surgery. You aren't eating normally and are recovering.

I had no reflux, but I had gas and yes a heavy feeling in my chest. I was dizzy and lightheaded a few times. I was recuperating from anesthesia and surgery. That is all normal. By day five I felt better and after 2 weeks much better. The rumbling and grumbling in my stomach took some time to go away, as my body got used to the band and the way I was eating ( or really drinking).

I think you should have given the band a fair chance before removing it. One week is not a fair chance. I'm sorry you felt you had to take that drastic of a step, but I'm glad you are feeling better now.

Wow I guess I am amazed that any physician in his right mind would remove a band after only a week. How much thought had you given this before you decided to have the band put in? This is a life changing procedure but it is only a small part. It appears that you just have not reached the point where you are ready to make those necessary changes. There is no magic bullet. There is no quick fix. It takes a lot of determination and effort to succeed. I wonder how old you are? I feel bad that you have undergone 2 surgical procedures and are right back where you started. I also wonder if you again decide to change your mind if your insurance company and physician would even consider putting the band back in. I do not mean to sound heartless but I mean come on; 1 week and you were done. What kind of effort is that? Of course you were sore, you just had surgery. Of course you were weak, you just had surgery. The gas pain goes away after a week or so. You just seem to have given up so easily that perhaps the band would not have worked for you anyway because it does not stop you from eating. This is especially true in the beginning. I have had the band 13 weeks and have lost 44 lbs and that is with 5-6 days at the gym, and counting calories of only 900 a day. I have no restriction yet with only 2 fills. But I wanted to change my life and was willing to do whatever it took to accomplish that. I am sorry if I sound mean but I think you need to do some soul searching and maybe the lapband is not the best choice for you. Maybe you are just not ready yet. It does not mean you won't be someday, but you have to want to be thin more than you want the food. It is as simple as that. I wish you luck in your struggle.

Hey you guys I ate today for the first time after my first fill and I have any restriction at alllllllll!!!!!!!!!!!! Is that normal??

Did you mean to type you don't have any restriction? If so, yes, it's normal for many people to not get restriction after the first fill. It depends on a lot of things, like how big your band is, how much fill your dr put in and then from there it is just individual people.

The band is around the stomach and we have fat around the stomach, so we have fat around the area where the band is, so that can affect how much fill each person needs.

Once you get some restriction, you can lose weight ( and more fat) and then your band gets a little looser and you need a little more fill.

How many fills you need depends on how much you get at each visit, but it's a good thing to gradually reach restriction as being too tight is not good.

I am so happy you are doing better! It is totally normal to not have any restriction. The band is empty and food can just pass right through. I still had no restriction after my first fill. The second one has been an eye opener. Eating slow, chewing obsessively and only have a few bites before I am full. The "fullness" lasts 3-4 hours and I have to have a few more bites of something. Everything you have gone through is normal. Stay strong, we are all here for you.

Wow. I am REALLY surprised that he removed it after only a week, unless there was something he saw that was REALLY wrong with it. What did he say when you asked him to take it out? did he try and talk you out of it?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
