Pureed Food Stage of my diet, why am I not getting full?

Recommended Posts

So I'm a week and a day post-op, and I'm on a pureed food diet for the next 3 days. I have had pureed chicken twice, up to about a cup at a time, and I dont feel satisfied. they say that i should be feeling full around 1/2 cup.

idk, anybody expierience this too?

What you are experiencing is very normal. It sounds like most of your surgery swelling has gone down, so your appetite has returned. Since your band was most likely put in empty (unfilled), you will feel little to no restriction with your eating until your first adjustment. Just be patient....the first 6 weeks after surgery are for healing, not weight loss. Once you get your first adjustment, you will really feel how the band will adjust your appetite.

Hate to burst that "first fill" bubble, but not everybody gets good restriction on the first fill. It can take some people several fills, some a few and some don;t need one for a long time.

Check out the Thread by WENDELL on "how the band works" and "how fills work". Then you understand the process better.

Just figured you might as well have this info now, so you're not disappointed if it doens;t work for you the first time.

Always makes a difference how much your Dr puts in the band at each fill.

I should have clarified. I am probably one of the few people who got major restriction with just one fill. Shortgal is right...for most people it takes several fills before you get some good restriction. Didn't mean to be misleading....

Until you get good restriction, pureed food will go through your pouch and not keep you full long. This stage of food is for healing. You had surgery and no matter what your sutures and incisions look like outside, your inside is still healing.

Sorry, but you might need some willpower. Drink flavored Water etc in between to help stay very hydrated and just be on a diet until you get restriction.

I know it sucks, and we didn't get banded to be on diets, but if you want to continue to lose, until restriction, it's necessary.

Protein is key. Be sure you track and get enough every day. It helps the cravings.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
