Dr. Spiegel - Would you recommend him?

Recommended Posts

Texgirl I'm chuckling to myself because I'm short, wear glasses and have brown highlighted hair! I've attended his seminars so we will probably see each other at some point. Hope you are doing good after surgery.

Dr. Spiegel gave me my first fill on 3/31. I didn't feel a thing!!!! Not restricted though, so I just made an appointment for next Monday. When I read some of the threads on this website I'm so happy I used Dr. Spiegel, some people have to wait months before getting a fill and have to be on liquids for 4-5 weeks after surgery.

Hey there Texgirl! That's great! (you not feeling a thing) I'm scheduled for my 1st fill today. Am looking forward to it because my appetite has increased. I'm really happy I used Dr. Spiegel too! I've also read about people being on liquids for weeks at a time. What size band do you have? Was wondering about your restriction if it has to do with the band size. And how much was your fill? (cc's)

Mel, my band is 4cc and I think he put in 1.2cc on the 31st. I don't know how he decides what size band to use. I talked to one lady in the office with a 10cc band and she hasn't been able to find restriction yet and was very unhappy about it. I'm not feeling any restriction at all. I'm eating small portions but I'm forcing myself to not eat more. I can eat bread and rice and I know I shouldn't be able to do that. It's frustrating and I'm thankful for this board so that I know it's normal to need a few fills.

I too have a 4CC band. I had 1.6 put in for my first fill and .4 for my second. I am currently at 2 CC. From here forward, he will put in a tiny bit because a small amount will make huge changes. He told me he decides on which band according to the size of your stomach when he gets in there. (I was totally flattered when he told me my stomach was very small) LOL, he probably thinks I am a head case. I took it as a huge compliment!

I've heard about people being on liquids for weeks as well. What is Dr. Spiegel's post-op diet? I'm scheduled to be banded on May 14th and I'm nervous, anxious, and excited all at the same time.

For post-op, the first week you stay on liquids, slim fast, etc. The second week you can add in creamy Soups, the third week you can have mashed potatos, soft fish, etc. and the 4th week you can have anything (except sweets)!

I also have a 4 cc band. I'm able to eat pretty much anything at this point. It's almost as though I've never had anything done-but not completely! I really don't want to have to go back a few weeks afterwards. A coworker has a 10 cc & has had 2 fills so far. She's got great restricition at this point. She went to some place on Main and she swallowed some barium to see if she was able to pass liquids. It's similar to the test right after surgery. Her pouch actually stretched and she was told to do liquids for 4 days in order to shrink it. The saline was completely removed & reinserted. She experienced the same feeling as though she'd been freshly filled.

I'm going to tell him the amounts of food I'm able to consume. I'm hoping that it'll have an effect on the amount of my fill (fingers crossed!).

He did mention he determined the size of the band based on stomach size.

Thanks for the info. That doesn't sound too bad. How was your recovery? How long was it before you were back at work. Congratulations on being 21 lb down. Has all of this weight loss occured after being banded?

Texgirl answered marvelously! It was a pretty easy post-op. I was able to advance prior to scheduled time-cleared by the doc of course! No day is consistent w/the day before for me. There are times I'm able to eat more & then less.

Who's your doc dmu & where are you having it done? I'm excited for you!!!

I had surgery on Friday and returned to work Tuesday. All of my weight loss has been since surgery. I was at my highest ever on the day of my surgery. It seems to have slowed down because I've been at 21lbs since Saturday.

My recovery was just fine! I had surgery on a Friday & returned to work on Monday. I think it actually helped me to be at work instead of home where I probably wouldn't have been so active. I walked as often as I could.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
