Let me introduce myself, My name is Cameron and I am A surgical first assistant and Bariatric coordinator for a Lap-Band surgeon in Southern Colorado. I am not here to try and find patients or to try and cure problems but I do find I am able to better help our patients and be more informative by reading others posts and seeing how other folks were able to solve insurance issues and I have learned some tricks from other posts. I am more than happy to answer questions that I can with the knowledge that I will always remind you it is the way that we do it so you should call your surgeon to make sure of what they want. I hope nobody minds me being here. Thank you for letting me learn how to better help our patients

I don't mind. You're honest and forthcoming, so what more could we ask for?!?! I'm so glad that this board can help you help others. What a blessing!

Thanks for being so honest about why you're here, and feel free to dig through the old posts. Maybe you'll find even more to help those patients that you work with.

Hi Cameron, and welcome! In all my journeys through the banding knowledge on the internet, some of the wisest people I've found are the medical types who are taking the time to really interact with bandsters. You have a very valuable perspective to share, and it's good to know you appreciate that you can learn from us as well.

Nice to meet you, and I hope we get to know you better. :)

Welcome Cameron: As one of the moderators come on in and take your shoes off and sit a spell. Thanks for your honesty and that you aren't trying to solicite patients.

I would ask if someone approaches you on a post to take the conversation to a Private Message.

Welcome again.

Cameron-

I'm so glad your here! We can use your experience and if you have any questions about how to better serve your patients, you'll find lots of ideas here!

I have a question that maybe you can answer-

what are the current theories on why we need to keep getting fills? I've heard stomach tissue thinning, losing fat around the stomach, etc. What do you think?

Also, some people experience sudden restriction weeks after a fill...I don't understand the physics behind the band...but couldn't it be that saline doesn't travel up the tube until later?

Again, thanks so much for saying hello and thanks, too for helping give morbidly obese patients a new life.

Megan

Well, I'm not banded myself, but if I was going to have a procedure the band would be it and believe me I travelled all over the US to different seminars learning about all the different procedures. In my opinion the band is the safest choice.

On the fills, most people need three to five the first year. Surgical swelling is going down for about twelve months which cuts down on restriction and yes the first stuff to melt away is on the inside so the amount left under the band around the stomach goes away which in turn cuts down on the restriction.

Hi Cameron,

Welcome, its nice to have you here. I have some questions... My fill doctor (who I absolutely love) doesn't use the barium swallow when he does flouro fills. I have heard of other doctors in my state (Oregon) who also do not use the barium though I know far more people who get the barium. It seems like I am missing out on something without getting it. What is your offices protocol on barium and flouro fills? Also what is your offices' theory on erosion? It seems like far more complaints regarding erosion have occurred by patients from the surgeon I used and of course that concerns me. It also seems like there are endless theories regarding erosion. Have you had any occurrences of it in your office? How many years and bands have been placed there? Again welcome and I'm glad you've come to visit. Best wishes, Teresa

P.S. Just so folks don't think I am rude I am replying to most questions privately instead of floating pages of what I do with my surgeon out there, and remember your surgeon may be different then us and that does not mean that it is wrong it's just we all have different tendancies

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
