Can anyone eat bread? I know I can't!

Recommended Posts

I haven't had a piece of bread in 2 months (since my pre-op diet), and I was craving some. I was out to Breakfast, and ordered some eggs, and a fluffy, warm biscuit came with my Breakfast. Hmmmm..I wonder if I could try a few bites? I've been so good with my eating.

I took a little bit of margarine, spread it on the hot biscuit, and slowly took a bite. Yay..no problem. Took 2 - 3 more bites..still OK. Took a 4th bite...OH NO! Massive tightening in the chest! I felt like a just swallowed a lead ball, and it was in my chest and swelling. I waited a few minutes, and it just wasn't moving through. I took a few sips of Water, and I think that made it worse. I then got the loudest, most painful case of hiccups EVER! I had to ask for a take-out box for my breakfast, quickly pay, and rush to my car. The hiccups lasted 10 minutes, and must have helped the bread go through, b/c 15 minutes later or so, I was feeling much better.

Guess I won't be trying any kind of bread again in the near future! Ouch!

Was this experience after you had just 1 fill? I am having my first fill on Fri. so at this point I don't have a problem with anything going down. I just wish I wasn't so hungry. My friend has had 2 fills and she can still eat anything without a problem.

I had my first fill about 3 weeks ago. I had no problem with bread before my fill. As a matter of fact, I was able to eat almost anything before my fill. I also stopped losing weight before the fill. My fill has definitely restricted my eating. Also, it was a pretty aggressive fill (almost 3cc in a 4cc band). I am going to wait a few days, and try some crunchy, thin-sliced, whole-grain toast. The biscuit was probably not the best choice to try for my first bread.

crispy bread is better than doughy bread. eat tiny tiny even tinier than you think pieces, and chew a lot and moisten it with your spit. don't eat plain bread... you don't need light or anything like that, but just don't eat it plain.

I have trouble (only had 1 fill and I only have very mild restriction) with soft breads and flour tortillas. I can't do hamburger or hot dog Buns, dinner rolls, etc. However, if any one of those are toasted or grilled, then I'm okay. I only have a hard time when they are fresh and soft. MAN getting stuff stuck HURTS like a mo-fo!!! :rolleyes2:

So far I haven't had any problems with bread products, I am careful about not eating too much of them, but not because I had a hard time. Of course, I haven't had my first fill yet, that will be in a couple of weeks, and I don't have much restriction, so I am sure that after my fill things will be much different and I will take it really easy. I hope I don't have to cut bread out completely, but I certainly don't want anything getting stuck!

Haven't had my first fill yet and I have no trouble with bread. In fact, everything and anything goes down! That's probably about to change Thursday when I go for my first fill.

Tried a bagel chip today. Took the tiniest bite, and chewed 20 times. YOW! Didn't go down well. Felt like I was eating rocks! Tried 2 more bites..no luck. I still have to try some light toast.

I can eat bread. In fact I had my first fill last week, 2 cc's and he said I had 3cc in at surgery. I felt no restriction. I went back today and he gave me another 1cc. I lost 3# in a week, but I am feeling hungry and struggling not to eat. So he gave me another cc and I hope this will give me some restriction. I now have 6cc in a 10 cc band. But I have eaten Bagels and crusty bead. The bagels are toasted. I think toast goes down better because you can chew it more. I have not tried a biscuit. I would miss bread. I don't eat it often, but I would miss it. Wasa crackers are good. Have you tried those? Diane

diane - that's weird, my doc says it is supposed to be completely loose with no restriction after surgery.

citygirl - i didn't mean to lead you astray with the crispy - i haven't tried anything like bagel chips, i guess i wouldn't even consider that bread, because it is so completely crisped. i ate pizza the other day and had to take TINY TINY TINY bites. Like, this big. well, i guess that's gonna depend on your screen.

I was able to eat bread, sandwiches, bagels--anything until my last fill. I used to love these bagel breakfast sandwiches that they sold at work. I was eating one VERY slowly after my last fill and NO WAY!! The pain and torture that I felt was definitely not worth it so I haven't had one since. I can eat just a bagel, but I think the combination was just too much. I can still eat sandwiches, especially on toasted bread, with no problem. I can't do sticky things like cake and one bite of a doughnut was enough to stop me dead in my tracks (like I should even be trying, right?). So that is my bread story--and I'm sticking to it:tongue:

I haven't tried soft breads, Bagels, english muffins, etc. I do eat sandwhiches and use your grainier breads. I haven't had a problem with them. I can also handle pastas so far. I just got my second fill so I'll know in the next week how much has changed.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
