I started my journey last July/August.:confused2: I did the 3 month diet and exercise plan only to basically be turned down by my insurance company saying that I wasn't fat enough. So I added 3 more monthes of physician supervised diet and exercise and resubmitted everything, plus with a written appeal letter. My problem in the eyes of my insurance company is that besides being overweight, I have no major health problems like, diabetes, sleep apenea, high blood pressure etc. I'm really freakin healthy in that regard.:cursing: But I do have acid reflux/heartburn, pitting adema, knee surgery twice and thingsthat I pointed out were recognized by the National Health Institute. Today I got the call from my insurance company saying that they had taken another look at my file and said that they were approving my surgery for the Lap Band!!!:drool: They were going to contact my doctor and they would call me to get things scheduled. I'm am sooo excited, it's finally becoming a reality. Anyone that has been denied by there insurance company, try again.:scared2: I read that alot of insurance companys sometimes will say no just because(theyre vicious basta*ds)but because they think that alot of people will just except that and not press it. Hopefully next time I'm back on, I'll know more. YAAAY ME!!!!!!!!!

Hi,

I'm going through the same thing.... I'm 5'4 and 228 - not 233 which is what is needed for no co-morbities... After taking all this time to make up my mind I dont think I will be approved... I definitely can't self pay. What insurance company do you have?

I have bc of Texas, and yes it took 3 years. First they said i was not fat enough, my bmi was only 38. Then they said i had not been fat enough long enough. Its been a long road and i even have 3 comorbid factors.

however, i finally have my approval  and april 14 cannot come soon enough.

hopefully no one will have the same problems with insurance i had.

Good luck

Kelli:thumbup:

I have Aetna PPO. And I live In Independence Missouri. I was surprised that my insurance even covered it, most do not. They cover 90% after my $250 deductible. I read an article in our local paper stating that most insurance companies automatically tell you know thinking that you will give up. So it's always a good thing to keep submitting things and pressing them. Sometimes they get tired and just give in also. Good Luck to everybody. Susan:shades_smile:

I'm so happy for you. I just went to the doctor and asked about getting the lapband surgery. I have been a "big girl" all of my life and the doctor told me that I have to try to lose weight on my own..work out..blah blah. All the same stuff I've tried already numerous times. I am really depressed about it and I am just so tired of being the fat girl. Your story gives me hope that I might be able to get this surgery in the end...I just wish it'd happen sooner than later.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
