Question about surgery

Recommended Posts

Hey all. I have two questions that I hope you can answer. I haven't seen the surgeon yet who will be doing my procedure, but I am very curious abouts somethings.....

1) Will the surg. have to shave my belly clear of all hair before the surgery?

2) Will I have to take my navel piercing out? I just got it done and I don't

want to take it out....I will if I have to, but I prefer not to.

3) Do they swab your whole belly down with Iodion prior to the surgery?

My sister and I were talking about the procedure, and she was comparing it to her c-section...now I kknow that this procedure isn't NEARLY as invasive....but she said the shave and iodion is standard procedure.

Thanks in advance for any input!

I have answered your questions below. WHen is your surgery scheduled? You seem anxious about it or am I reading too much into the post. LOL!!

Unless you are extremely hairy I doubt they will shave your whole belly. I don't even think they shaved me in the small incision areas.

2) Will I have to take my navel piercing out? I just got it done and I don't

Sometimes in surgery they will tape up a wedding ring if it can't be taken off so they might do that for you. You can ask them about it.

3) Do they swab your whole belly down with Iodion prior to the surgery?

The Betadine (Iodine) wash is standard. If you are allergic to Iodine then you need to let them know. There are alternatives they can use. The Betadine was pretty sticky afterwards but it can be washed off in your first shower with soap and Water.

My sister and I were talking about the procedure, and she was comparing it to her c-section...now I kknow that this procedure isn't NEARLY as invasive....but she said the shave and iodion is standard procedure.

My son's gfriend just had surgery to reset a broken leg and she had to take out her body piercings. The doctor was doing the typical run down of questions, her mom was standing there with her, and he said, ok all jewelry removed right? She looked at her mom, then my son, then back at the doctor, then she said, wellllllll, all that you can see. Yuk, anyway, they took the others out after she got to the OR. Talk about embarrassin, so I'd say,

#1-Not unless you're really hairy

#2-Oh yeah

#3-Pretty typical

Take care

Thanks all for the info. I do not have a surgery date YET but I am working VERY hard on getting it. With the grace of God, hopefully within a month or so. Am I anxious?? OH my gosh YESSSS! I can't barely stand it! I have done the psych eval, I am going on the 15th for blood work up, upper GI, and visit to the nutricianist... I have my Gastroent. visit scheduled for my endoscopy which is required prior to surgery and then I have to meet with the surgeon.... And of course get approval from my insurance company....Iey iey iey, when I say it like that, it seems there is a lot to do yet! YIKES

I have desided to take out the navel ring anyway, because IF it gets infected, then I wont be able to have the surgery more than likely, untill the infection clears up....SOOOO I am not going to take any chances. I will take it out now, let it heal and then get a SEXY one when I loose my first 50 pounds! I hate like hell to take it out, but I don't want to risk NOT having the surgery........soooooo........I will be an adult FOR NOW......and take it out.....dammit!

Thanks again!

Talk to you soon!

I am having my surgery tomorrow actually... and I was told all piercings had to come out, which presented a problem as i have my smiley done and when it was piericed the ball was lightly welded in, therefore it wont just come out it would need to be cut out.

After hearing this I was told that during the surgery an insturment can be used 'sometimes' that any metal on you it could burn the skin, so they are going to put a layer of gauze under my piercing and hopefully it will be ok! As far as something like the navel I would say just go on and take it out, let it heal and get it re done. I'm taking my others out right before they take me into the OR, then putting them back in asap, and if you do that too, then it might be ok! GL

All piercing have to come out because there is no way to cover the ENTIRE metal with tape. I doubt you'll have to endure any shaving. Betadine (the brown stuff) is no longer used in most hospitals. About two years ago it was replaced with chlorhexidine... it's colorless and a better anti-bacterial agent.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
