Band replacement nightmare (long, sorry)

Recommended Posts

drkel, you had to have the band replaced after 5 years? It slipped? Was it because of the weight loss? I'm concerned about it. I had the band put in Nov 07 and am really worried about it getting all messed up come 5 or even 10 years from now. That would really stink. I didn't fare too well as far as hospital stay for the band. I was in there for 4 days. I guess I just had a slow go of it and thought that maybe it was because of my age. I couldn't imagine having issues 5 or 10 years down the road. Just is pretty tough and scary to imagine. What exactly happened to your band and why? Is it a common thing to happen? Thanks for your imput drkel.

Dianne

Hi Dianne--my original band slipped. I got food poisoning that landed me in the hospital for nearly a week. I guess all of the retching and vomiting caused the band to slip. I had NO PROBLEMS at all for nearly 5 years! I mean, just the usual PBing and sliming every now and then, but nothing to speak of. So I wouldn't worry too much about slippage.

Thanks drkel for sharing. I hope that my band will be a permanent "fixture" for me. I'm just starting out and it is a slow go but I'm hoping for the best. I am on my way! :-) Thanks again. Dianne

I was devastated to find out that I had slippage. I had food poisoning very badly in August. I wasn't sure, but never had anything happen to me like that before - and I had violent episodes of vomiting which simply had to unlodge my band. I didn' t know it at the time, but something wasn't right. It took me a couple of months to go see the LapBand doc, only because I was gainin weight slowly, and it bothered me. He found slippage and said I would need repair immediately.

I am comforted to see that this happened to someone else, too, cause I hadn't seen that before.

When he went in to put my new band on, he found a hiatal hernia. I"m glad, but recover has been very slow for me.

After reading this board and all the various concerns, it seems that every body is so different, it is comforting in its own way to see that we all have unique problems.

I'm trying to keep my chin up, but after 3 weeks it's been a struggle to stay "up" and positive. I know I"ll be fine - so thanks for all the upbeat comments.

Strange, my doctor told me I could take advil right after my surgery and didn't give me any limits on any over the counter meds.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
