Calling all April Bandsters!!!!

Carol yes I believe they are correct about the amount of time needed is about 1 hour. However, alot of the experts differ on the science of exercise. I am almost 100% the exercising in your heart zone is a great idea because if I did a full out sprint for 1 mile I would probably die of a heart attack hehe

My Water aerobics instructor also mentioned that you burn more doing water aerobics because your body has resistance along with it trying to keep your extremeties warm... They might be onto something there. It also tightens your muscles up and makes you feel tired more quicker I thought when I did it.

So do you exercise for 60 min 7 days a week?

What about all the rest? I generally find my heart rate in the 150's according to the cardio machines... a little too high for fat burning for me. I don't know. I'm feeling more confused than ever. I wanna do the right thing, but that seems excessive to do it every day. And a little unrealistic.

I can do 1 hour about 3-4 times a week if I am being honest lol

on a great week I will do 3 days vigorous exercise then 2 days of weights or something else. I don't do weights for an hour tho.

Last night I did 30 minutes of step aerobics (sweated my butt off) then about 25 minutes on the treadmill walking 2.8-3.2 Mph.

The website encourages weight training to rebuild/maintain muscle that we lose during weight loss (thus, the reason for the plateau's). But, it doesn't really say anything about combining the two. Shouldn't there be a day of rest? How in the world could anyone do 60 minutes of cardio after a weight training session?

Listen to me...opened up a can of worms! LOL

haha no you're right carol... seriously I cannot imagine who could have time for that.. well anyone that has a schedule like me anyway. I have to stretch my whole schedule to do it a few times a week.

That reminds me of something funny. I met with my step aerobics teacher last night. When I met her she was all nice and seemed quite and down to earth. After about 2 minutes into the workout I swear the lady turned into the hulk! She started making grunting noises and getting all jazzed like her adrenaline was going something fierce. She would scream into her mic on her head lol Then she sang along with all the songs. I think thats what happens when you spend too much time in the gym LOFL

Anyway my daily schedule is like this...

Get up at 4:30 be at work by 530-6 (I have a small amount of flexibility)

I get off work between 5-6 pm (I work 10-12 hours a day)

Get home cook dinner done around 7-730

I watch about 1 to 1.5 hours of Tivo and am in bed by 9 LOL

Ok where do I fit in 1 hour a day?

Oh I have 2 kids, 2 dogs, a husband, and a house

Oh and DH wants to have another kid! OMG shoot me now!

ROFL!! Your killin' me!

First of all...I feel bad that you got sucked into my web of questions! LOL

Secondly...good Lord! Your schedule sounds a lot like mine! Except I won't be having any more kids, but DH is always up for practicing. Ugh!

I would love to be addicted to the gym. I've told L2L that many times. I want addiction transfer to go that direction...BUT- shoot me if I start grunting or much less wearing a head mic! LOL Of course, who knows, maybe we will all become personal trainers. L2L will teach Zumba that's for sure!

My turn to spam the thread...

As you all know, I'm still on my plateau (and gain). I've been reading up on Target Heart Rates and such. On WebMD, I found some good information about exercising, but I want to know a few things.

1) Do you exercise following that protocol? (Target Zone, etc)

2) How LONG do you exercise? (ie, 30 min, 40 min, 60 min)

3) How many times a week do you exercise? (3 days, 5 days, 7 days)

4) Do you weight train, and how often?

5) Do you weight train and do cardio on the same days?

6) If so, do you do it before or after the weight training?

So I obviously think I'm doing something wrong. I just read that the new standard for weight loss is now 60 minutes every day. For real????? Wow, I was still operating under the premise that 30 minutes 3 x week was sufficient. Where have I been? Why did I think that was going to help me lose weight? An hour seems like a lot. According to WebMD, the first 20 minutes is burning sugars only, the second 20 minutes burns the remainder of any sugars, and starts to tap into the fat reserve. After 40 minutes, it's using all fat!!!!!!!!!!! Oh, and they recommend exercising in the Water or the cold as this causes the body to burn the fat in order to stay warm.

Thoughts?

1. Yes, mostly because of my classes, but I'm learning where I need to be and I use it as a guide.

2 -3. I try to do at least 40 min, 5 x week - but this is real life and it's not always so.

4. Yes, 2 days per week for 45-60 min

5. Yes, always. However due to time constraints sometimes it's not the full 40 min.

6. Always before. I'm spent after lifting weights.

Yes, it's true for the first 10-15 minutes you burn the sugar stored in your muscle then the fat. The longer you go, the more fat you burn. I would have to say I don't agree with 60 min per day of intense cardio; however, in my classes they teach that you should do some type of "lifestyle activities" everyday which could include climbing the stairs instead of using the elevator, gardening, cleaning house, etc. These are the activities that keep you active on a daily basis. These activities can be broken up into segments, ie 15 minutes here, 10 minutes there, etc. According to my text book they recommend 3-6 days per week of active aerobic activity for 20+ minutes. This is for optimal health, not weight loss. This is where you would probably be able to maintain your weight. To loose weight, you would need to increase your time and for cardio vascular benefits these need to be consecutive minutes and you would need to be within your target heart rate zone. And yes, technically you will burn more calories in the cold than not, but IMHO that would be a ridiculous way to try to burn extra calories unless you just dig it. I wouldn't recommend joining the Polar Bear Club or anything! LOL!

Anyway, I hope this helps. Is it now as clear as mud, do you need more info? Just let me know. I hope you don't think I know it all, I just happen to be studying these things this semester.

I'm actually also doing a huge project for my tech writing class and I'm doing it on nutrition and healthy living. I'll be giving a short presentation at church on a Wed night when we have dinner. I'll be making healthy Entrees and talking about how to maximize your nutrition and daily activities. So, I've done a lot of research lately.

Hey guys! I'm back...thanks for asking Bea.

It took me awhile to read 6 pages of posts to catch up...ya'll have been talkative and so much has happened, don't know where to start.

Bea- WAY TO GO!!!!!! I am so happy for you girl! That is such good news with the scales moving, losing inches and losing fat%! Keep it up and onederland will be here in no time!!!

L2L - glad you had a good trip. I know how you feel from being wiped out though. I always feel like I need a vacation to get over my mini-vacations:)

Well, the camping trip went great. It was cold but not too bad. The kids loved it. I didn't eat the best but I also hiked and walked non-stop so I came home not gaining anything:) Now that I am done catching up with laundry, I can relax some....

Didn't make it to the gym yesterday, too tired. But made up for it today with 1 and 1/2 hours. Felt really good to get back to it. Was surprised how much I'd missed it.

I go back for another fill Thursday. I am so excited. I have no restriction. Kept waiting for it to come since the last one but there is none. I can eat whatever I want and unfortunately have been. Haven't been making too good of choices lately but its time to turn that around.

Have any of you heard of Clean Eating? I've been reading about it lately and I think after this fill, I'm going to give it a try. I want to do it till Thanksgiving to see if it helps. If any of you have done it, let me know if you liked it or if it worked.

Sorry I'm so long winded today. Making up for lost time:)

Glad you are back, we missed ya! OMG!!! I love Tosca Reno!!! I have every books she's done. She has a new one out for kids. I'm going to get it soon. She also writes for Oxygen magazine and every few months they put out a Nutrition mag with just recipes and such. It's great and I love clean eating!! I'm glad to find someone else who knows about it.

Do share Carol  I love hearing new tips.

Hey Mom I would love to know more about the clean eating as well.

I have heard of the negative calorie but that doesn't work for bandsters since it would be way too hard to get in enough Protein if you're stuffing up with negative calorie food.< /p>

Let me know if you want info on Clean Eating, I've been into it for a while now. Am I religious with it, no but I always come back to it and hopefully it will slowly become my lifestyle completely (well, okay, not completely, but you get the picture! LOL). I've totally spamed today with really long posts, but I'm happy to send you any info you might want. Clean Eating is the premise for my final project that I'm working on.

I made a great dinner and was so hungry, but I haven't been able to get anything solid down this evening. I've been cramping today so TOM is on it's way! Crap! I'm about to make myself a big Protein Shake and watch Biggest Loser that I recorded. I'm starving and want substance dang it!!! Oh well, liquids here I come! :grouphug:

Hope you are all having a great evening!!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
