I'm 5 days post op and can not lie down at all, it hurts too much. A couple days in a recliner is ok, but how much longer will it be before I can lay down? anyone have an answer?

I always sleep on my side too and it hurts to even try to lay down.

Try putting a pillow there between you and the bed, that helped me a lot.

I'm almost 3 weeks out now and can sleep on my side, stomach, whatever.

It gets better. I couldn't lie on my left side for a week or two after surgery, but it gradually heals and is okay. I can sleep in any position now, including on my stomach.

the only position I could not do right after surgery was on my stomach. After about 10 days, I could sleep on my stomach, as well as either side.

sleeping on my left side was less comfortable for the first few days and the nurse told me there was some reason for that, like the liver or some organ.

The long body type pillow was a help to me when I had traditional "open" gallbladder surgery many years ago. Wedging it right next to your side and then sort of roll into it. It elevates, molds better to the body than laying against the mattress.

My port position is slightly right of the center of my midriff. Laying down flat my port is fairly easy to feel but doesn't protrude up ( yet). I don;t know if that will change as I lose more weight.

I am a side sleeper also, and I spent the first two nights in a recliner which left me very sore and achy. Finally on the 3rd night I couldn't stand it anymore and with the help of my husband we propped pillows in strategic places and got me propped up so my port sight didn't hurt. As far as hurting something, I don't think sleeping on your port sight would do any damage to anything. They sew it in there pretty well internally so if you are able to sleep how you want to sleep go ahead.

Last night was my third night. I am off the pain pump, but I do take oxycodone before going to bed. I am usually a half side half tummy sleeper, if that makes any sense. I was able to sleep almost normal last night, slightly on a pillow when sleeping on the left side.

You can also take tylenol to help with the swelling. I take one 500 mg tylenol around noon time.

I am doing great and have very little pain. I also make sure to get up and walk. The day after my surgery (Friday), I went and got my hair colored and cut.

Best of Luck!

for the first bit after surgery (like a week) I was forced to sleep on my back but after that I found I could gingerly sleep on my side if I had a pillow that I kind of layed on / hugged.

I slept on my side when I came home from hosiptal. I have a body pillow which is basically a full length pillow and I wrapped myself around that. In fact it was the best way to relieve the pain because when I was wrapped around that I had no pain at all. THis was on the non port side though. I have managed to sleep on the other side as well. I though that it was just teh pain that stopped you sleeping on your side. You have me worried now, does anyone else know whether I will have damaged my port by sleeping on my side?

After 1 week I am more able to sleep how I like (on my tummy). So it just takes time and you should rest better very soon.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
