Bizarre Post-Op Symptom: Burps smell like smoke

Recommended Posts

Ok, I must be the freak of the world because I've searched this forum and googled this weird side effect and can't find anyone else with it.

When I burp, my burps smell like smoke. What???? No, I don't smoke at all. I'm six days post-op, does anyone have a theory on what this might be? I mean, it actually tastes like cigarette ashes and butts are in my mouth.

*freak*

Ok, I agree, that is bizarre. I have never heard of anything like that. Have you talked to your doctor about it?

It could be that they use a cautery scalpel (which burns instead of cuts tissue) and maybe the smoke smell/taste is that being slowly released via the lungs.

Or..........you could be a sleep walker who just took up a nasty habit!

Thank you Susan and mica! The dragon routine has finally stopped. I didn't ask my doctor because it seemed like such a minor thing. I thought it may have been from cauterizing something too but I suppose it will remain a mystery! =) At least this thread will be here in case another weirdo has it happen to them. =)

Could you be in the state of ketosis? this happens when you are on a high Protein low carb diet. It's common among Atkins dieters. I had something VERY similar for about 4 weeks post op. Once I started adding more carbs into my diet, it stopped.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
