Are the Side Effects Worth It

Recommended Posts

ParrotheadCathy, Thanks for the reply, I went to see my friendly surgeon yesterday and they prescribed carafate as well as pulling the rest of the Fluid, not much about .3 CCs, out of the band and put me on warm liquids only for a few days. The carafate put out the fire, opening the band made it so I can swallow again, as long as I do it slowly, and I was able to have some nice chicken broth for the first time in a couple of days. Once the swelling goes down we'll be ready to get the show on the road.

Thanks for the support

Duane

Hi all

November 12, 2010 will make 3 years post-op for me; I love my band, I can't see a life without it. I had no problems until now as a result of over restriction. I had an unfilled today 5cc gone I am left with 3cc.I feel like mourning. I have no buyer’s remorse, I think about how much worst off I would be without my band all the time.

No. I have lost use of my throat muscles, a common side effect never told about. Got pnuemonia, a common side effect, My band has slipped. It is stuck up by my throat. The doctor said it had not but I knew and had an upper scope which proved it. Now what probably band removal and permanent damage. It never even helped me lose the weight I still felt hungry and just used self control. I am having it removed. Read the horror stories it could be you.

part of the lower part of your stomach should have been sewn over the band to the upper half of the stomach. Did the dr. forget to do that...it keeps it from slipping.

my surgery is fast approaching for a lap band and so is my fear. Any words of encouragement appreciated.

Do your homework one out of four peple have bad side effects and need to have the lapband removed. I think bypass is safer, You have a forein body in you via the lap band. It erodes your throat and stomach. Now my esopageous does not work, I have trouble swallowing and food gets stuck in my throat. I am not even very overweight and I have had pain everywhere, gas bloating, vomiting. It made me feel like such a loser, thinking I needed this tube in me to maintain a healthy diet. It is garbage. I hate it and am having it removed. My band has slipped. If you ant to do it because of extreme obesit do gastric bypass. at least IT WILL work. No doubt it is proven and you will not have tubes and portals and clamps in your body. No no no listen to me.

three years and only 61 pounds lost with lapband? With gastric you lose all your weight within a year at most and keep it off, and you think that was success?? That is major failure.

Hey Brooklynqueen, I think I'm being banded around the same time you are. I'm scheduled May 25th 2010 and am scared but looking forward to a better life without all that extra weight. When is your surgery? I know there will be hurtles to jump over but if we stick to what the dr's tell us and follow our diets we will be fine. We probably will have at least 1 to a few PB's but that will be the 2nd hurtle....learning to listen to our bodies! (the 1st will be the pre-diet and the last will be living and losing with our new lifestyle........but will this really be a hurtle? with all our new fantastic clothes etc.?)

Let's keep intouch. I'm new to this messaging thing. How do you add someone to your profile as a friend?

I came across this forum when researching Lap-band. I am currently looking into the option and am in the early stages (ie: am to schedule my first appointment to discuss with family doctor tomorrow). I must say that most of the information has been helpful and encouraging. But I did note that someone stated to get gastric surgery because it "works and lasts forever" and to do research....? If you do research you will see that gastric does not always last forever. In fact, typically you start to gain back some of the weight within 5 years after surgery. I know a woman who had GB done about 7 years ago and she is now up 60 lbs since then. Poor diet and eating habits? Perhaps....but she also had a baby.

I am a little disgusted with the lack of empathy from RSSP. We ALL have a weight problem here. If not, we wouldn't be on this forum. We all know the challenges and frustrations that come with it. But to say "only a 61 pound loss in three years????? Crazzzzyyyyyy. get serious what are you doing eating icecream and candy? Get serious or give up that is pathetic"?!?! That's a low blow and at most, very immature. As my momma always said to me, "If you can't say something nice, don't say anything at all". That and "practice what you preach". Since you too have had/do have a weight problem, obviously you have been snacking on ice cream and candy too.

But thanks for all the possitve notes guys!! Keep up the good work!! I hope to have as much success as you all! :)

Maybe just ignore RSSP he obvious is only here to grief. Anyone that comes to a weightloss lapban story forum and acts like a child deserves it.

Jack said it best. I much rather PB or get the slimes when I wrong my band than live another day gorging on food and gaining weight.

I was back to work in 3 days. Could walk up stairs. Had mild gas in my shoulder but was nothing compared to years of back pain and fractured feet.

I love my band and everything we have done together in the past 6 months!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
