Is there any advantage to doing preop diet longer than 2 weeks?

Recommended Posts

My surgery date is scheduled for April 4th. I was just wondering if there is any advantage to starting the preop diet now. My surgeon requires it for 2 weeks before surgery since it shrinks the liver. I know that the more weight I lose before surgery decreases my risks of obesity related surgical complications. Anyone have any thoughts on the subject? Has anyone done the preop diet for longer than two weeks?

Thanks,

Kim

Hi Kim:

I did a modified "weight watchers" diet for three months prior to surgery, and the ten day pre-op fast. I lost 38 pounds before being banded. I think it may have made surgery recovery easier. The day after surgery I was out walking and hanging around at the pool. I think that the pre-surgery liquid diet might be a bit much for more than the two week pre-op requirements. I can remember how hungry I was getting when it was liquids only pre-op.

Good luck.

Sue

Thanks Sue. I'll just eat healthy and exercise until it's time to do the liquid diet.

Way to go... 107 pounds lost! How long did it take you to lose that much? I just can't wait to see those kind of numbers for me. This website is so inspiring.

I did a modified/partial liquid diet: 2 slimfast shakes a day and one meal of whatever (trying to keep it healthy). Anyway in a month I was able to loose 17 pounds eating that way. All liquid pre-banding is difficult, but throwing in a meal of real solid food makes the shakes a bit better. Anyway I suggest finding a shake you like, not loath, pre-op.

I have been doing the pre-op diet for 2 weeks, this week I have found it so much easier. I dont feel hungry much at all now-its just the boredom of the same stuff day in day out. I do think its easier to have something to follow, you know exactly what you are allowed each day.

Kim:

I was banded on 7/26/07. However, I started dieting on 4/23/07. So, I've been very fortunate and have lost 111 pounds (as of this morning)in just over ten months.

I hope you do well too. There are many people on this website that have inspired me along the way.

Take care.

Sue

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
