Pre=op diet - no food at all for 3 days! ?

Recommended Posts

I am getting banded on Monday and I am very excited. My doctor however has me on a pre-op diet for 3 days that has no food whatsoever. Just splenda drinks and no sugar popsicles.

Yikes- I am very committed but this seems ridiculous. I have never not eaten for 3 days in my life even when I was a hippie in the commune yuk yuk.

I'm not sure I can do this and I feel bad. I'm thinking maybe a few Protein shakes.

Will I go to Band Hell for defying my doctor?

Sadie

I was on a 2 week clear liquid diet!! I was suppose to be on a 2 week Protein shake diet but I caught a cold and had to stop so because I was coughing to much... 3 days is nothing!

trust me just keep yourself hydrated! keep drinking.. trust me you'll be full.. !!

good luck!

Mine was 10 days of liquids. 3 days doesn't sound too bad to me, either.

Here's the burning question: How committed are you to doing whatever it takes to be successful with this surgery? My doc said for him, the pre-op diet is partly to shrink the liver, and mostly to give him a clear indication of how committed the patient is.

Just food for thought.

My liquid diet is different than all of yours. sugar free popsicles/ broth/ Crystal light/ sugar free jello/ diet Ocean Spray (not lite) and Water. That's it.

It is a 3 day fast. And yes I am doing it but a bit shocked at how severe it is. The after surgery diet is also very severe compared to what i have read on this forum.

But I'm okay with it now after getting over the shock. I have to lose weight for my health and I can do anything for 3 days.

I lost 3.5 pounds yesterday just thinking about it! yuk yuk (I really did!) Gotta go have some broth.

Love to all and your food journey- mine is just beginning.

Actually, your liquid diet is exactly the same as mine was, only a week shorter.

What is your post-op diet instructions? I didn't get my post-op instructions until they released me from the surgical center.

Wow- TGirl I am amazed you were on this for 10 days --- that is really rough--

Post -op I have liquids for 1 week- Protein shakes and juice-- I'll be really looking forward to that after this fast!

Then after that i have mushies for 2 weeks then real food for 2 weeks then my first adjustment.

It's interesting to see all the different things Dr's require out there. My Dr asked me to do a 2 week liquid pre op which I have done a week. Then post op 3 weeks of liquids only, then 5 weeks of mushies then fill and another week of mushies then regular foods. I'm weak now I can only imagine post op.

My post op was:

4 days Clear Liquids

2 weeks full liquids (cream Soups, yogurt, etc...anything that would fit through a straw)

2 weeks mushies (anything that you'd be able to eat without teeth, mashed potatoes, oatmeal, grits, cream of wheat, refried Beans, cottage cheese)

And finally, solid food. Hard Protein first, then veggies, and then starches, if there's any room left.

Pretty straightforward.

Hang in there, you'll do great!

Man are all the doctors different. I have 2 days pre-op Clear Liquids only. Then 2 days post op clear liquids only. Then 4 weeks of liquids & puree, followed by 2 weeks of mushie food. I figure I should loose some good weight during all that.

Currently I am on a 1600 calorie a day diet with the nutricianist. It actually isn't so bad. I cut out all soda. (I sort of do miss the diet coke)

Good luck everyone!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
