protien shakes advice PLEASE!

Recommended Posts

Ok, my surgery is next Friday and my surgeon informed me that I must be on a liquid diet with a max of 50 carbs per day! Uuuuuggghhh! So I guess that means only low carb protien shakes?! I went to Walmart last night and bought 4 different kinds and they all taste GROSS! Is there some particular brand that anyone has had good luck with? Please God tell me there is! I can't have the slimfast or carnation because of the carbs.

Sad Sad Sparkle drinking yucky stuff.....

Hi Sparkle,

Yeah, Protein powder made as instructed tastes nasty. I made my shakes in a blender and added crushed ice and/or powdered cocoa, artificial sweetener, instant coffee, vanilla yogurt, etc. Once it's all blended tastes pretty much like a milkshake if you use your imagination.

thanks Alex for the tip... I bought the pre-made variety, in the cans. Barforama! I saw the powder, but thought surely that must be worse. But I can see the value in doctoring it up or something. liquid diet wouldn't be so bad if the carb thing weren't an issue. This should prove to be an interesting 7 days.

May I suggest powders?utm_source=BariatricPal&utm_medium=Affiliate&utm_campaign=CommentLink" target="_ad" data-id="1" >unjury Protein drinks. They have a website which you can check out, also they send you samples. They are lowcarb, have chocolate, vanilla and now "no taste" which I guess you can add to anything like crystal light yogurt or Soup. I cannot bear the taste of anything ucky and I have to say these did the trick for me during liquid stage.

Take care and good luck with your journey!

Amy

I agree with the unjury Protein drink. It's really very good.

I also had Isopure clear liquid Protein Drink. I thought it was very good, though a number of people in the support group thought it was awful. But I've been having it for the past 1 1/2 weeks. It's clear liquid (so good for the clear liquid phase), has no carbs and 40 grams of protein!

Good luck.

Mary

I used Muscle Milk. Cookies N Cream and chocolate were my favorites. I bought mine online at AllStarHealth.com for $21.00 for the big container. It says to use 2 scoops per serving. I only used 1 because it is loaded with carbs and Protein. Blend in a blender with ice and milk. It lasted throughout my liquid phase.

They have lots of flavors to choose from. Hope you try it.

c'mon have you not heard of nectar? It is made by Syntrax. If you like fruity drinks you will love it. I get the cherry (kinda tates like cherry jello), apple (green apple taste) and they have a new kiwi/strawberry that is really good. I get it either at www.dpsnutrition.net or www.wlssucess.com both have about the same price but I like wlssucess because it is here close to where I live so I can pick it up instead of having to pay for shipping. Also if you like chocolate the champion pure whey stack in chocolate is really good. Both of these powders mix really well and I make them with plain Water and they are very palatable. For bars I like the trioplex and the one way bar.

I have the same info re: the sugar free carnation instant Breakfast. I have them, but right now it is easier for me to use the pre made shake.

I think the ensure high Protein has 16 gm of carbs--probably to high, but right now I am focused on healing-not weight loss. I really don't care if there are too many carbs. I want something that tastes good & has Protein. Being on liquids I have lost 10lbs so what's a few carbs anyway. It sounds like we are on the Atkins diet.

I also like the whey Protein from GNC - the chocolate is good mixed with milk. And the Atkins pre-made shakes aren't bad - chocolate royale is my favorite. The EAS AdvantEdge chocolate fudge are OK, too, although not as chocolaty as the Atkins. (Keep in mind that "good" is a relative term when talking about Protein drinks - obviously none of these are as tasty as, say, a brownie fudge sundae! :) )

Linda, my only concern with the Ensure would be what the carbs are. I'm not worrying so much about carbs as I am about sugar - you can have good carbs, but sugar is just empty calories. You're right in saying that right now your focus should be on healing, but you might want to give the label a read to see how much of that 16 grams of carbs in the Ensure consists of sugar for later on down the road. Good luck. :D

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
