Surgery in Mexico? Aftercare in US?

Recommended Posts

I am just getting started in my Quest to be a member of "The Band." I appreciate everyone's knowledge and encouragement as I read the board. I need your help.

My insurance company has said No. My questions are:

1-Did you feel comfortable/safe/understood if you went to Mexico with Dr. Ortiz?

2-What happened if you went home and there was a complication or question--I'd be 3000 miles away from the doctor!

3-What do you do for aftercare (fills, etc.) in the US?

Thanks--

You might want to read the threads in the "Doctors and Hospitals" section and the "fill Doctors" threads.

Don;t know where you live, there is also a Dr. in Colorado that has reasonable prices and places called "Fill Centers USA" that do fills, they are scattered about the country. I think they're more of them in south and South west areas.

If you are specifically interested in feedback on Dr. Ortiz (or any doctor), do a search for his name and see what you come up with.

I had my surgery in another state (and would be happy to give you details if you like -- PM me), but before surgery I found local doctors willing to see me for aftercare. I am returning to my surgeon for my first fill but will use one of them after that. If you decide to go out of the country or out of state it's important to secure local aftercare. Some people use FillCentersUSA. From what I've read here, the level of satisfaction with them varies, it just depends on the provider in your area. Some people love their local FillCenters provider and others have had negative experiences.

Good luck!

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
