WASaBubbleButt 41 Posted February 28, 2008 Hi all, Just wondering if anyone else is suffering with a hypothroid and has had the lap band surgery? How successful have you been w/losing weight? Were you able to come off your pills for the throid? I am scheduled for surgery in May. Thanks for any input. This is a fantasic site :blushing: I have Hashi's and I had no problem losing weight. Sad thing about thyroid issues is that it's easy to pack on the pounds but it still has to be burned off the same way. Cutting calories and exercise. But it can be done. Just make sure your labs are good and weight loss is the same as with anyone else. In my case my weight wasn't due to thyroid, I just ate too much. ;o)
cantweight2go 1 Posted February 28, 2008 Lorrie, I have had major hypothyroid problems since I was 12. I finally had the darn thing radiated when I was 37. I suffered from cysts, noduils (sp?) and a goiter. My moods were outragous. I don't think the meds should change after banding. Once a thyroid patient, always a thyroid patient. You may have a little change but not because of weight loss. I hope I am wrong for your sake. Good luck with the surgery
Sanlortut 0 Posted March 17, 2008 I had surgery on 3/11, so I'm not sure yet how the weight loss is going to go. Typically, I lose weight very slowly. I have heard nothing about ever being able to discontinue meds.
jjsmiles 3 Posted March 17, 2008 As someone else posted, once on synthroid, always on synthroid. I have come off all of my other medication though (for diabetes and reflux). I haven't had any "extra" problems with losing weight, although I get my blood tested to ensure that my thyroid levels are within the normal range.
Northernsun 4 Posted March 17, 2008 I have been on synthroid for years and am in my 3rd yr post banding. In the first year, after I had lost about 50 or so lbs i started getting dizzy spells occasionally. Had my thyroid tests and needed my dose adjusted downward. I don't think i will ever be totally off it but it pays to be tested regularly.
LostAtSea 0 Posted March 19, 2008 Just banded 2/29 & I also have Hashi's. My LB doc stated "everyone is different...so you might be able to stop taking meds, or you might not." (Nice, huh?) For the last 3 years, I've been taking Levoxyl every morning - my Primary doc requests that I keep taking it, but also that I have blood tested every three months, to see if the dosage can be lowered. Best to get blood work done regularly (like the previous response)... Good luck to you!
amamastime 0 Posted March 19, 2008 Hypothryoid here! The meds are for life. As for weight loss- for me the band has worked well. The little pill slips through my stoma without any problems. Although I have notice my weightloss happens in odd stages. No weight loss for 2 weeks and then whammy I put on my fresh cleaned jeans and they are loss. I hop on the scale and I am down some many pounds. Then nothing for awhile again. It can be frustrating at time- but it is a nice feeling when everything is baggy again. I have learned to put my focus on "no weight gain". Wishing you the best.

I'll plateau for a few weeks and then BLAM! down 6 pounds in a week and a half. It's not related to the thyroid though. Just the way these things work. 40ismyyear 0 Posted March 20, 2008 Ditto ... I was banded on 1/4/08 and am doing great so far. I take 175mcg synthroid daily and was afraid I would never be able to lose weight! This has been a really cool, dare I say easy ride so far! What I understand is what others have said...thyroid 'issues' are not caused by being overweight. Good luck and stay on top of your meds so you feel good while you are losing! I am convinced that having that little bugger regulated has really helped with my energy while I am losing/exercising.
OhioGirl 0 Posted March 20, 2008 I have hypothyroidism also. I was just banded on 3/4. So far I have lost 19 pounds combined with the pre-surgery diet and in my first 2 weeks. I have been able to come off my blood pressure medicine, diabetes medicine and my acid reflux medicine. Sorry to say still taking the synthroid and 300mcg at that. My family doctor said my thyroid should improve but I will most likely have to take some dose of synthroid for the rest of my life. Hypothyroidism is not one of the things that the lapband has been known to totally cure.... just help it out a little! I can live with that. But to answer your question I have been very successful with weight loss so far and I do not have any restriction in my band yet. My first fill is 3/31. I have been sticking to about 800 calories per day or so. Just not that hungry. Hope this helps.
TracyinKS 7 Posted March 20, 2008 When your hypothyroid, yours doesn't work.......... weight or no weight that doesn't change...... Diagnosed hypo at the tender age of 22.... I'm down 81 lbs size 24 to 12's! I LOVE MY BAND
amamastime 0 Posted March 20, 2008 Typically hypothryoid is typically passed down through the blood line. Thank you for sharing the doses that you all are taking. I had no clue where my doses my head as they continue to tweek the levels. My doctor is currently trying to kick my thryoid in to overdrive due to my age. As he said, to get it back on track for later in life. Appearently this was a problem I have had since a teenagers. So I will be watching my two girls for it. :wink2:
Lorrie Knox Malone 4 Posted March 20, 2008 Hi All, thanks so much for the great replies. You all have really eased my mind as far as being able to loose the weight w/the band. The weight just does not come off now. I eat healthy, exercise, and take my meds but down 3lbs up 2 over and over again. I get banded May 20th. Seems like years away. Just counting the months, weeks, days and hours till then.
