Outpatient turned Inpatient

Recommended Posts

I started off with the plan to be an out patient but because of nausea and dizziness I ended up staying a night in the hospital. The nurses acted like this was no big deal.

Is there other's out there that had to spend the night too?:smile2:

Yep...that happens. You were fortunate enough for your doc to do that...care for you. So many others kick 'em to the curb and let them tough it out at home.

My doc is used to patients traveling from all over to visit him and his clinc so he plans for surgery at suppertime, stay overnight and monitor the next day. I stayed a 2nd night ...overdid it during the day w/ walking around and shopping. We played cards until after dark and the next morning I was on my way home.

It's cheaper for outpatient...of course...or even 23 hrs and 59 minutes stay. But if you have insurance....plan on a stay as long as you can!

I stayed overnight. I think that it's routine for my doctor to have his patients stay overnight. My surgery was at 1:00 pm and I left the next day around 2:30. I was happy to stay.

Congratulations on getting banded and good luck with your journey.

I stayed overnight because I was from out of town. Since I had to come back the next day for the barium swallow, they let me decide in early afternoon if I wanted to stay or go to a hotel. I thought it would be better to be hooked to the IVs and monitors, so I stayed.

In hindsight, I may have gotten better sleep in hotel, as monitors and alrams were going off all night and I had a noisy roommate (she had just had gastric bypass and was in a LOT of pain).

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
