No hunger on liquid diet??

Recommended Posts

Hello all. I have a weird question... I am day 6 of my 14 day Optifast liquid diet. I don't even feel hungry, but I also don't feel like I'm losing much weight. The only thing I've had besides 4 optifast shakes and Water each day is two cups of broth (total) between 2 days and one diet sprite, I'm chewing sugar free gum, because of the nasty taste. I'm wondering why I'm not hungry, and why I'm not losing faster? Has anyone else experienced this?

I don't know about you, but I AM STARVING IN THE AFTERNOON AND EVENING. Especially when I come home from work and I have TO COOK FOR MY FAMILY....It's challenging, to say the least. But I haven't really cheated, just maybe put my finger in the sauce I'm cooking to see if it tastes good, and gosh darnit IT DOES!!!.

KEEP DOING WHAT YOUR ARE DOING. YOU'LL LOOSE WEIGHT. BE PATIENT.

haha brandy i wish i had this problem!!!

and you get 4 shakes a day!? i only get 3, but i also get 2 cups ove veg a day...

im getting there, the hardest thing i am finding is about 4-5pm, too early for tea, but i dont want to have my final Optifast for the day because i just know i will be hungry after tea...ive managed to push lunch out to about 2pm, but it must be physilogically programmed into my, because by 4pm im hungry again...its generally just head hunger and i can push through it with sugarfree gum...but its deffinatly i struggle!

but well done to you! and doog luck with your surgery!

A high Protein shake can leave some people feeling full, this is why high Protein is suggested for lap banders.

You don't "feel" like you've lost weight? Have you weighed yourself? Even if you haven't lost weight yet, you will, but the main thing about the pre-op diet is to shrink the liver and get your body ready for surgery.

Hello all. I'm having the exact opposite reaction. I have been on my liquid diet for 5 days now and have droped 8 LBS . However, starting this morning I have been ravenously hungry. I almost tackled a delivery guy at my office who was delivering some food to coworkers. I could actually see fear in his eyes looking at me. I am weak, have a huge head ache and will do anything for some food. Is this just my mind playing games with me? Do you think this will go away? Should I advise anyone ordering food to ask the delivery many to take a taser with him? Or should I cheat a little and get some food in me? Thanks for the help. These boards are fantastic. I'm glad I found them. I'm being banded on 3/10.

Hi Sobrien32.

First off, nope, you shouldn't cheat. Make sure you're following that diet to the letter. Stop and ask yourself if you're really, truly hungry or if it's just head hunger. I had a headache for the first few days on my pre-op diet, because it was low-carb and my body had to adjust (yes, I know that's easier than liquid, but when you're a carb addict it's challenging).

Just keep in mind that this is temporary, it's to make your surgery easier and you will get through it. I would avoid tempting food as often as possible, even if that means you need to get out of the office a bit more and take a walk or just take a break. My husband eats his junk food in our basement office so I don't have to see/smell/hear it. Good luck! You can do it!

is it weird if my doc doesn't require a pre op diet? i forgot to ask them (getting banded 4/17), but someone on this board who goes to my doc said she asked and they said no.

Thanks Greenchrysalis, I'm trying. I'm def a carb addict too I think that's most of my problem. I just feel really weak and run down. I hope this isn't going to be the way I constantly feel after the surgery. Thanks again.

Bozzj, My dr showed me some pictures of a fatty liver and said he has had to close people up just as quickly as he opened. That was enough to scare me into this pre-op hell . I don't understand how the dr's can be so across the board on this issue. It doesn't make sense.

See i don't mind doing it at all...for me it's the start of a great tool i'll get soon. Ok another question..how soon does this stuff start? Like just this week my surgery was scheduled..now what? They said i'll have to go for tests, etc, but when? Should I just wait until it gets closer (again it's 4/17)...i don't want to bug them, but i'm curious about the preop diet thing and what's coming next. Arrrgh!! Why did i forget to ask this in the consult!!

Bozzj,

My Dr told me in the last meeting I had with him which was about 1 month before the surgery. So your Dr might just be waiting to meet with you again and then spring it on you. Your right it's a good start. I think it's more of stopping people from having the last supper syndrome and eating everything. I do know from reading a lot of these boards that some Dr's don't require anything though. Good Luck.

Bozzj, I had my pre-admissions testing done six days before surgery, so I'm sure the hospital or your Bariatric Center will call you beforehand.

As for starting the pre-op diet, my surgery was originally scheduled for October 17th and at my final visit with the surgeon, he told me I had to start on the low carb soft diet on October 1st. If your surgeon doesn't require it and you want to get a jump start on your weight loss, you could start it like April 10th (and Easter will be over by then!!)...

I was on Medifast for two weeks prior to surgery, and I didn't feel particularly hungry. I had 5 Medifast meals (shakes, oatmeal, Soup, powdered eggs) and a "lean green" meal (5-6oz lean Protein plus 2 cups of green vegies).

You're not hungry because high Protein diets have a satiety effect. I don't know how much you're losing vs. how much you expected to lose, but my doctor said he wanted to see me lose 10 pounds on the two-week pre-op diet. I lost about 13 pounds in the two weeks, but I started at a BMI of just above 60, so my body was primed to lose ;-)

Low carb diets also cause ketosis which is what's making your mouth taste yucky. My only suggestion would be to switch from gum to sugar-free mints after your surgery. I swallowed a piece of gum about 2 weeks after surgery (trying to get the yucky taste out of my mouth) and it was stuck for at least a week...

Good luck!

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.
