Being alone after surgery...

Recommended Posts

Did you guys do okay after surgery being home alone?

Hubby and kiddo will be home in the evenings, but I'll probably spend most of the first week alone during the day.........I'm sure dh could take another day off, if necessary.....just wondering what others experiences were.

I spent the day of surgery and the day after surgery with my husband. After that I was on my own. My family visited, but I didn't need them for help or anything. My DR recommended someone be with my for 24 hours after surgery.

I did ok being home by myself. My roommate took the day of my surgery off of work since I was only in the hospital for a few hours, so she helped me a lot that first day, but she returned to work the next day and I was home by myself. I didn't have much trouble getting around...we put a stepstool in the bathroom so I would have something to hold onto while trying to sit and stand up, and put a chair next to my bed to help with this as well. My roommate came home on her lunch break to check on me, and helped me wash my hair in the sink...the next day I was able to take a shower and wash my hair on my own. I was expecting my level of mobility to be a lot less, and my level of pain a lot more than it ended up being.

HarleyGirl -

I did just fine solo, once someone drove me home. I prepared by having everything I might need at counter height so no bending down. There is a great list on the board about items to buy before surgery.

The first day I napped and watched movies, I took pain meds and slept through the night. The next day I was walking around and sitting up chatting with visitors and napping. By day the second full day after surgery I was out of the house for a little bit.

You will be fine if you plan ahead.

Lanie

I was okay. BF couldn't take off from work (we worked in the same dept at the time and couldn't both be out.) So I was home by myself and I LOVED IT. I just hung out and slept all day/watched tv. I was pretty out of it, but it was nice to be alone and just get better. I am a doter, and don't do well being the dotee. :smile2:

My DH took the day of and the day after my surgery off to be there to help me, but after that, I really only needed help lying down and getting up. He did do laundry for me since there was no way I'd have been able to bend over the washing machine to unload it when it was done, but other than that, I really didn't need help. You should be just fine.

Thanks for the reassurance everyone....I'll plan ahead and all will be FINE!

I was fine, I had my surgery on a Friday, DH dropped me off and went to work, came in Saturday morning with the kids to collect me. He took care of the kids for the weekend, but I was fine, we went for a walk Saturday and Sunday and I was pottering round the house, just having a few breaks on the couch - which I never usually do, lol, we got new leather couches on Monday and I think I've spent 5 minutes on them!

On Monday he went to work as usual, I drove the kids to school and had the days to relax. Eliza went with Doug, dropped off at Nanny and Pa's for a few days.

The following week, Doug took off fishing for 10 days and I coped fine.

Its really not a huge operation, the recovery for most people is very quick.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
