Need Support - Hvaing a hard time with UHC

Recommended Posts

So I need you all more now than ever :)

Posted this in 2 forums, sorry if you read it twice, just need the positive comments and success stories from people with Insurance appeals..

UHC denied me yesterday because they want more of a documented wight history. I have been seeing my doctor since 2003 and he wrote I have been overweight for 15 years.

The Drs were so sure I was getting approved they were in shock, soooo I had to ask my Dr to write a specific letter or update the old letter that I have had a BMI of 40 plus for 5 years.

Thats what they want UHC people.. documented BMI for 5 years.

I have 2 co-morbidites, polycystic ovarian disease and diabetes (discovered during bloodwork for surgery) Did the nutritional and psychological consult, EKG and Chest Xray.. guess theywant my firstborn now too (when I have one.. if I have one PCOS doesn't help!)

Even the reps at UHC could not answer why I did not get approved and they all think the medical reviewer guy is being a pain.

I thought UHC required a 35 with 2 co or just a 40 bmi would get it. I have UHC also, but I'm about 12 pounds to light to qualify with a 40. 38.1 isn't bad enough for them. Hurting feet and knees (I have had to have shots in) apparently don't count.

I just don't have it in me to start a big fight. We're going to come up with $$$ and self pay. I called and told them I wanted to self pay and now I have a surgery date in March.

Sorry I can't help be more positive but the past few weeks for me have been discouraging also.

So sorry. I really don't have any advice other than asking your doctor to write another letter. I too have UHC and am waiting to hear if all is good. My surgeon's office told me not to be surprised if UHC asks for a 5 yr weight history. I know I will qualify, but it will be difficult to get the numbers since I have moved around a lot. I'd have to ask my OB/gyn since she is my most consistant doctor and ask for my non-pregnant weights. (I've had 2 kids in the past 5 yrs.) I do have my weight watchers weight loss history and would submit that too.

Good luck and keep us posted.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
