I was banded on the 13th and I too had that shoulder pain. I had some Soup yesterday and as soon as I felt full (about 1/2 cup) my shoulder had that pain. I hope this does not always happen.

I was just banded on 1/25/2008 so i am a little further out. I can say that shoulder pain for me started . . . and was really really bad one week out. It felt like I had pulled something. Even if I wasnt moving the pain could sometimes be terrible. It was always the worst after eating of if I had a lot of gas.

It took about two weeks to get back to normal. Tylenol did not help it but hot baths (not submerging my stomach of course because of the healing incisions) and my husband's massage helped a lot.

I read that it was normal to have a little shoulder pain after surgery, but I never knew it could go weeks out. I talked to the doctor and she said that it was normal to have some pain in the shoulder (usually left) but that if it continued I should be seen. I think we are all different in how much it affects us, but the shoulder pain in general is very common. Thank goodness I am feeling better now.

I had pain in my left should for about 6 months after surgery but my doctor said it was due to the gas i was given during the surgery and because I didn't walk around enough during recovery, which I didn't, the gas had no where to go...thankful its gone

pain in the shoulder? Some of us had hiatal hernias(sp?) fixed while the doc was banding. This causes the pain in the left shoulder.

Check with your doc. You could be having pain from hernia repair instead of band.

Funny you should mention that . . . I was miserable with shoulder pain for a couple of weeks. I did have a significant hiatal hernia that was repaired during surgery. The doctor never mentioned that it would cause more than the abdominal gas release shoulder pain mentioned. Others I have spoken to have mentioned the pain but it was not that big a deal . . . now I see why mine could have been so different. Thanks for bringing it up :0)

the pain in the shoulder (s) is from irritation to the vagus nerve which is a nerve that innervates the stomach,it will pass when the irritation does,,

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
