Oh snap....pre-op diet...can I cheat at all?

Recommended Posts

I am not telling anyone about my surgery, I just realized that 11 days before my surgery (and I am suppose to diet for 12) that I have a school auction/function/dinner to go to. Will it matter if I nibble as to not be obvious or should I not eat at all????

Personally I would not take a chance, my surgery is April 11th & my Dr told me he can tell if someone cheats on the pre op diet from the size of the liver & he will close you right back up without the band and then you will have to wait at least 6 months before he will give you another chance. It isnt worth that risk!! Maybe you could pretend to "not feel well" at the dinner to keep from eating.

I'm not planning anything in the ten days before my band. My last good meal will be February 29th. I'll have my last good beer :).

Its not worth the risk.

I definitely do not want to tell you to cheat, but I will say there are several docs who do not require a pre-op diet. Honestly, my doc told me no sugars and no fried foods. No sugars...no problem...but I had some fried mushrooms...a lot of them...I didn't really lose much weight pre-op...maybe 6 lbs but then I gained back three just before the surgery. So, it varies from doc to doc. I don't think anything is wrong with a nibble here or there if you can stick to just a nibble.

I would never advise anyone to cheat, but as some of you know, I was worried pre-op because I did cheat. I made it through surgery fine, and they were able to do it without opening me up. The weekend before surgery my family and I went on a weekend mini-vacation. It was fun, and I ate some things I shouldn't have. If I had to do it all over again, I would try my best to stick to it. If nothing else, just for the peace of mind.

Thanks all....I am going to try not to eat and am definately passing on the drinks. Hope to make it out of there with the minimum of damage. I think I will eat enough to equal my lean cuisene, since I can have one of those a day. I will definately be sniffing my table mates Desserts though. Hope I dont drool too much on them:eek:

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
