Experiences at NYU?

Recommended Posts

I had planned to do surgery in NJ, until I noticed that my insurance indicates that NYU Bariatric is 'Certified" and if I qualify I put no $ out at all - a huge decision maker for me.

I attended the info session last week, and have to complete my 6 month documented weight loss program.

Just wondering if any one has experience with the NYU team and if you can share any information?

Tks!

2boys3cats,

I just came home from NYU today after getting banded yesterday by Dr. Ren at NYU. The whole experience was wonderful. I was completely out of recovery and in a room within 2 hours of my surgery, and feeling good, although a little sore from the surgery. All of the nurses and doctors were great, and Dr. Ren did a wonderful job. I paid a $250 deductible, and my insurance picked up the rest. As the NYU team is recognized as leaders in the field, you should be quite comfortable in your decision if you decide to go that route. Good luck!

I was banded by Dr. Fielding on 1/25. He was great and NYU Hospital was great. I'm down 62lbs so far and couldn't have seen myself going anywhere else for it.

Thanks for your reply and congratulations on your amazing weight loss. I noticed you were denied from your insurance , and it looks like you switched carriers - what were some of the hurdles you faced insurance wise? Did NYU help you navigate through them?

I was banded at NYU 20 months and 115lbs. ago. I had it done by Dr. Fielding and he was great, and I hear that Dr. Ren is just as good. So, whomever you choose the doctors are are all great there, including their staff.

I was banded by Dr. Fielding on 1/31/08. Everyone at NYU is so efficient and professional. I think Dr. Ren, Dr. Fielding and Dr. Kurian are really the best doctors. Dr. Ren founded the NYU Program for surgical weight loss Dr. Fielding alone has performed over 4000 Weight Loss Surgeries. The whole team are really compassionate and care about the patients (plus I really like them). The center is recognized as an American Society for Bariatric Surgery Center of Excellence. I wouldn't go anywhere else.

OMG I am so excited to have found this posting! I am just getting started in the process with NYU and if anyone can provide some guidance I hope you all can! I have my appt with Dr. Huberman at the end of this month, provided he approves me, can anyone tell me how long afterwards they were able to see the nutritionist and then their surgery? After weighing this decision for so long (nearly 3 years) and want to jump in! Also if anyone was a self pay can you tell me how much it was (you can always send me a personal message if you want).

Thanks for your help everyone!

My husband had an appt with Dr. Huberman mid February and will have his nutritionist and nurse appt mid March - 5 weeks later. I think they are very busy and that was when they could give him an appt. Then you make an appt to meet one of the surgeons. If all your paperwork is in order and you qualify, they will schedule your surgery at the same time. My surgery date was 6 weeks away but I met Dr. Fielding right before the holidays so I'm sure my date for surgery was a longer wait then usual.

My appointment with the nutritionist was about 4 weeks after my psychologist appointment. And then my appointment with Dr. Ren was another 2 weeks later. And surgery was 4 weeks after that.

I started the process, in September 2007. Met with the psychologist in Brooklyn, had my first office appt, end of September with Dr. Ren, and had my surgery scheduled for January 21. Went back for another appt in October. On December 14th, got a call that my surgery was being cancelled on January 21st, and they moved me to December 31st.

So, from my initial contact with Dr. Ren's office to my surgery, it was alittle over 3 months. When I consulted with Dr. Ren, she even called my parents while I was in the office so we could all discuss the surgery.

My doctors files showed several years of weight loss attempts, so I didn't need the 6 months.

I have been very happy so far.

Is the 6 months a mandatory thing?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
