Lefty from Tennessee

I've just begun the process for Lap Band surgery. I too have to see my PCP 6 months before I can have my surgery. I have seen her twice and will see a psychiatrist on Thursday for her approval. Dr. Charles Morton at Baptist Hospital in Nashville TN will be my surgeon. His office said I can't schedule an appointment with him until I have finished all 6 of my appointments with my PCP. My insurance also requires that I spend the night after my surgery. For me I think that will be a good thing.

If anyone has had their surgery with Dr. Morton I would love to hear from you. Also should I go ahead and attend the seminar or wait until closer to the end of the six months? Once you saw Dr. Morton how long did you have to wait before they scheduled your surgery? Any suggestions of things I can do now to make this procedure easier would be greatly appreciated.

I've enjoyed reading your post. They helped be decide to go forward with this surgery. I need to loose half my body weight and don't seem to be able to do it any other way.

hey lefty,

the preop diet of dr morton is 2 Protein shakes Atkins advantage to me taste best...and then a higher Protein lower frozen carb dinner for 2 weeks...this is to shrink and firm the liver so that there's less a chance to injure it durin the surgery..

I have to wait at least 6 months before my surgery. Did you diet prior to seeing Dr. Morton to get used to eating less or just wait until the 2 weeks before surgery? Do you attend the banding support group that meets the 2nd Thursday of each month?

Barbara

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
