Port Replacement Surgery Due to Port Infection

Recommended Posts

Who had port removal surgery, due to a complication, and eventually port replacement surgery?

As some may know from my previous thread, I had my port removed at nine weeks post op after suffering from a nasty infection that put me in the hospital for a week.

I am healed from the port removal surgery which occurred in Dec. 07, and scheduled for port replacement surgery March 12th.

I am looking forward to finally having a port, and feeling some restriction! It has been totally will power since my initial band surgery in Oct. 07.

Whew:mellow: I did not expect all this to happen but at least I am healthy and healed from the infection.

If you experienced port replacement surgery do you have any suggestions or issues you could share with me?

My surgery is going to be outpatient under general anesthesia, and my surgeon is placing the new port through one of the old incisions from the initial band surgery. He does not want to place a new port in the same place the old port was because of the risk of the infection developing again.

How long was your recovery? and did anyone develop an infection after port replacement and or a complication again?

Summer: I wish you the best with your upcoming surgery. I am having my port replaced (to a low profile port) on March 4th along with a Tummy Tuck. If I'm feeling well enough I'll let you know how it all went. I'm a little further down the line with my lapband and I just want to reassure you that you are going to love your band once you get your new port and have some restriction! I remember well the days when it was all will power on my part and I just want you to know that those days will end. With that being said don't expect it to happen for a while. It takes sometimes 3 or 4 fills to get to the perfect level. It is going to get easier though and thank goodness that your over your infection. I wish you the best.

A low profile port is smaller, as you lose weight the port can start to stick out and be very visible under your skin. I've now lost enough fat on my stomach that this is happening to me. My plastic surgeon says that when they do the Tummy Tuck and remove the last of my belly fat, the port will be even more visible. So, they are going to put in the smaller port. Some people never have a problem with this. It depends where the surgeon placed your port and how you lose weight, etc. I guess that they don't put the lower profile port in first, because it can be harder find when get fills. Good luckwith every thing!

I can't find very much on here about port problems. I am having a lot of pain around my port. It has stuck out for a while, but now my fiance says he can see it himself. I have lost all my weight and weigh around 123 now. My port is right under my breast and has some bruising around it now. I had my surgery 3 years ago come Feb, and have never had problems til now. It is so sore to touch or even graze over even with my clothes on. I have an appointment with a Dr on wed. b/c I have since moved from Nashville where I got banded. Just wondered if anyone has had similar problems or has any idea of what could be wrong? I am really worried.:)

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
